Apparently this cap hit can spread out over the 2 years instead of the 20 mil hit next year his option would have given.
Good move for GB and Love, but probably better for GB. If love plays well, he'll earn more than if the Packers picked up his option, but not by much (and only in cash, not cap). And if he struggles, GB can get out of the deal a little easier than they previously would have. If he stinks and we have to start the Caleb Williams or Drake Maye eraz I'm guessing it will only cost us like $8 mill against the cap. And if he's good, we only pay him an extra $2 mill while also saving some cap next year. Feels like a win/win.
Interesting move. I guess I wouldve expected them to try and get a longer extension to keep his $$ down for while.
I get what you are saying but, this also gives them an "incase something happens" out. this gave them lesser of a hit than the 5th year options, gives Love a guarantee for this year and next so if Jordan completely falls on his face and the Packers go something like 3-13 then it gives them 1 if not 2 1st rd picks one being pretty high to take one of the top QBs, if he balls out they were going to have to give him a ton of money 1 way or the other.

He's started 1 game and has 80 career passes in the regular season. Regardless of what you've seen in practice, there's no way you can have 100% confidence. And even if they do, who's the say Love wanted to sign a long term deal.
Conspiracy Theory: maybe part of the Rodgers deal was to include a clause that IF Rodgers retires in 2024 the Packers then have to trade Love to the Jets for a cheaper price.
2008 Rodgers wasn't immediately elite though either. He had a solid season but wasn't spectacular. Plus he had some decent weapons with Driver and 3rd year Greg Jennings.
So average to slightly above average wb play from Love might not be a horrible thing. Ideally he shows some flashes as Rodgers did. But this team seems to be in a bit of a rebuild, so it might be a tough year for him. The WRs and TEs on this team currently have a combined 135 career catches and 1550 yards in the NFL in their careers. That's less yards and a few more catches than Jefferson and Hill had last year. Doubs' 42 catches and Watson's 611 yards are the highest totals for anyone. If Love has an average year with this offense, that's probably a good sign.
