    2023 Offseason

Alright folks how should Monte improve this roster? How can they go from good to great and actually contend in the postseason?

IMO they need an upgrade at backup Center and they need an upgrade at starting PF. I'm happy with everything else.

The Kings free agents are Metu, Barnes, TD, and Lyles.

I would be good with Metu coming back on a near minimum deal, he has value as a depth player.

I think this series likely ended any chance Barnes had of coming back. I think more than likely the Kings look to replace him with another free agent.

TD like Metu I would be good coming back as a depth player at a similar contract to what he has now. My guess is he likely will move on to a team that will give him more playing time.

Trey Lyles is a guy I think we need to resign. I think he gets a raise I just hope it's not too much.

    We basically have 4 spots

    My opinion/hope.

    1 goes to Trey Lyle

1 goes to our 1st round pick.

1 goes to the Sasha Vezenkov

1 goes to our new starting SF/PF.

I get why everyone wants to replace Barnes, but I’m having a hard time thinking of who we can realistically get that would be an improvement.

I would love to see us make a move with the Nets for a SF. Holmes and our two 2nds for Royce O’Neal or Holmes a 1st and a 2nd for Finney-Smith would both help us. O’Neal would be a good bench guy. Finney-Smith might actually start and allow Barnes to come off the bench.

A defensive-minded back-up C like Damion Jones would help too. Might be able to get someone like that in the draft.

Here is my problem with Barnes. He was the veteran on the team and come playoffs he disappeared and his minutes dwindled because he wasn't one of our best 5 players. I think Barnes holds us back, we will be paying 20 million for a guy who needs to be better in the playoffs. If we want to take the next step we need to replace Barnes with someone better. Right now the Kings have the prestige to sign a good player for 20-25 million range.

I think Barnes could be moved to maybe jump up in the draft… I think Leonard miller could be a good pick for us. We’d probably need to move up a little to get him. But I like his fit on our team.

I also heard on the radio a discussion on who we could use on our team. Kelly oubre was the name mentioned. That would be a great get.

I think our team will really improve next year with the improvement of our young players. Davion improving his outside shot would make him a huge piece to our team. His defense is great. And I was impressed with his limited offense in the playoffs.

Keegan needs to improve as well. He seemed a little timid, understandably. Hopefully he hits the gym as well. He needs strength and confidence. If he does that, he could be the scoring and rebounding threat we needed.

There’s also rumbles of Sasha coming over next year. He’s a good three point shooter. Also has great mid/short range shooting with high arcing shots. But defensively, he’d be a liability.

We need to add a great rebounding/shot blocking big man.

Barnes is a free agent. We won't be able to trade him unless he wants to be traded in a sign and trade deal.

Sean Cunningham said a respected scout told him there is a 90% chance Sasha comes over next year, the only thing stopping him is they can't come to a contract agreement.

Oops. Forgot he was a free agent.

Yeah… sash will pretty much take Barnes spot. I’m really hoping for Keegan to bulk up and become more of a power forward.

I am hoping we can find a player in the 20 mil range that can fit in with the Fox/Sabonis age area. I like Barnes as a person but I think if the Kings resign him for more than about 12 mil a year they are overpaying him. If the Kings offered him 12 mil a season might come across as a insult.

I think he’ll probably get something closer to the $16-18 million range.

If we move on from Barnes, I hope we get a PF with some size. I know there aren’t a lot of guys like this but someone like Bam Adebayo, Jaren Jackson, or Evan Mobley would be a perfect fit. We need someone who can rebound and block shots, but who can still switch onto perimeter players. We also need someone with at least a respectable outside shot.

Whoever we get has to have 3 point range or Sabonis has to develop 3 point range. The warriors had to switch up because they only had 3 guys who could hit the three. In the modern NBA game you really have to have 4 guys on the floor who can spread the floor, if you have 2 guys on the court who are non shooters it just clogs up the middle.

I agree with that. I think that’s what makes it hard to find a good fit. We need a shooter, but we also need a switchable defender who can rebound. Not many guys like that out there.

Not the best defender, but Christian Wood can shoot and rebound. Might be able to get him with the MLE.

With Sasha likely coming over, I think he ends up replacing Barnes. We’ll have plenty of shooters on the team. I think we definitely need length, rebounding and defense. I also wouldn’t mind a bruiser down low. GS really just beat up sabonis and got away with it.

One guy I’d like to get is Jonathsn Isaac. I’m guessing he gets traded this year, as the magic seem to have their young core set. He’d be a good risk/reward player with the length to play a big role defensively. His health is his biggest issue obviously. But he’s still only 25 years old.

Before this season, I would have been for it. We were in a position where we needed to take home run swings. Now, I don’t think we should take a chance on a high risk player. If Isaac can’t play, it would be a big setback for us. The only exception would be a Holmes for Isaac trade. It would be worth the risk in a negative asset for negative asset trade.

You might be right… all depends on the other moves we make, how much our players develop (especially Murray) and how many calls the refs give us. I know that sounds petty… but the warriors had more free throw attempts than us in the series. While the yearlong stats showed that we should have had more free throws. Oddly enough, against the lakers they only had about half the attempts the lakers had. Hearing warriors fans complain is funny to me… they obviously don’t realize the refs helped them in our series.

The most obvious example is sabonis and how many foul shots he took. In the 3 games in Oakland… he had a total of 2 foul shots. 2 free throws in 3 games and the constantly roughed him up in the paint. There’s no way that’s real.

Anyway… back on track. We shouldn’t really need an Isaac type swing. But I feel like being who we are, we need to make it so there is no way a ref can change the outcome. Plus, I think a lengthy athletic forward would do wonders for our team- especially defensively.
