I disagree with the thought process that you can't trade Hicks. It's all a matter of money. He batted .282 in ST. For a team that needs an OF, to get a switch hitting CF for a low salary ($3.333 million per year for 3 years) should be doable. The Yankees would have to eat the remaining $20 million.
The trade must be done prior to August 1st, because he can be traded anywhere. After that date, he has 10 years of service time and can refuse any trade. This was pointed out above. We probably should trade him in a couple of weeks while Bader is on the IL, because when Bader returns, it causes a roster crunch and someone would have to go. It's OK, if we plan to cut him, but we lose the ability to recoup the $10 million above. If not, we lose another player, someone like Florial who is out of options.
Therefore let's trade Hicks now at a reduced cost and give Florial a chance to play for a month.
