The thing that makes the most sense, is to see what we have with Peraza. Give him the SS spot outright. If he looks like he’s legit, then all you need to figure out is what you’re doing with Torres. IMO you go with the better defender at SS, assuming he at least is respectable offensively
I think we have to be honest with ourselves, one of them will likely start the season in AAA.

We seem to be assuming Peraza is a vastly better defender. Is he? What I have gathered from the bit of research I was able to find, he is described as a slightly better defender, both Volpe and Peraza project as above average defenders. Using the 20-80 scouting scale, where 50 is an average tool, Volpe’s arm is generally graded at 50 and Peraza’s at 55. On the fielding tool, which encapsulates range but not throwing, Volpe is generally graded at 55 and Peraza 60. Peraza has the advantage, but not drastically. Not every evaluator would agree with those numbers. Scouting grades reflect some subjectivity, and good scouts can differ on how they assess the same player.

    Volpe: Scouting grades: Hit: 60 | Power: 60 | Run: 55 | Arm: 50 | Field: 50 | Overall: 60

    Peraza: Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 60 | Arm: 60 | Field: 60 | Overall: 55

According to Yankees proprietary batted ball data, Volpe’s power is above Peraza’s. A more basic statistic, slugging %, backs that view; Peraza has slugged .429 in the minor leagues, Volpe .505.

Their AAA fielding is illuminating. ( Peraza has a much larger sample, almost 4X the innings played) Peraza fld%.971 Volpe .969. Range factor per game, 3.38 vs 3.00.

I second that emotion! Happy Birthday!

I also just had a birthday on 3/17! I stopped counting, in fact I'm starting to deduct a year every three! LOL

Exactly. Not everyone wants to be a Yankee and it's not necessarily because they can't "handle the pressure".

From what I’ve seen spoken about them here, from the bit of research I’ve done, and the limited “eye test” I’ve seen of both, I’d say Peraza has the edge. That’s not to say that Volpe can’t do the job at SS

I’m not debating the bat vs bat aspect. But I think Peraza will hit at an acceptable level, at worst. And as I see it that way, I see zero reasons to move him off short.

That’s why I say start him right away. Give him some time, see how it develops. Also gives a good look at Cabrera. Both of them handle business, makes it an easy decision on Torres. Then its Volpe time

But every one of them wants the Yankees on the bid to drive the price. Boras has admitted as much.

Maybe a bit less so today than years ago.

"Both have had plenty of opportunities this spring to showcase their talents, but Volpe has pulled away as the most productive, despite Peraza having a full year of experience in Triple-A and an 18-game sample size of regular season action at the end of the 2022 MLB season."

Is it really a competition? If so....

Just asking....how does Volpe compare defensively at 2B against Torres?

So Peraza is the slam dunk SS? Why do they keep playing him at 2B?

    I don’t see Rizzo playing 3rd base.

By now the actual starter usually stays at his position.

I think the FO is still undecided with SS, Volpe or Peraza.

You need to ask that question with Peraza……Volpe seems to be playing SS more than Peraza lately while Peraza continues playing 2b.

If they are going to roll with Volpe I am totally fine with it. My personal opinion is that Peraza should be the SS and Volpe at 2B if they are going with both of them.

    What about Torres?

They should just trade Torres now and then go with Peraza at SS and Volpe at 2b and then don’t look back!
