Because we have no one else, sad but true!!!

The only reason Zavala has been on the team at all is because we absolutely have no catchers in the system that are half-way decent.....He's the best of the worst!

Precisely the best if the worst, better than Perez. So why take the 2nd best of the Worst?

Anderson playing 2B at the WBC. Food for thought.

Some Spring position battles are still far from over...

    4th OF
Haseley, Leury, Marisnick, Reyes, Hamilton are battling it out for that bench OFer.

Hamilton brings obvious speed and defense, but no hit tools.
Reyes is having a solid spring but is tapering off after a hot start.
Haseley is on fire at the plate and he's stealing bases as well.
Leury is looking like basic Leury.
Marisnick brings defense but he's not hitting.

It's hard to say what they will look for in the spot, but if production mattered, Haseley is earning a shot.

    UTIL IF
Leury, Romy, Erik Gonzalez, Alberto seem to be the guys getting the most looks for our UTIL IF.

    Leury...See Above!
Romy is hitting more lately and they are working him in the IF and OF but he hasn't really done enough yet.
Erik Gonzalez and Hanser Alberto are both raking at the plate, but I'd give the nod to Hanser at this point.

    Bench 1B/DH
This is clearly a battle between 2 guys. Burger and Sheets. Burger is hitting for better average and power. Sheets is making more contact. Burger gives us a DH/1B/3B off the bench. Sheets gives us a DH/1B/OF off the bench. Burger gives us a righty bat. Sheets give us a lefty bat. I think this could go either way, and in the unlikely scenario that we start the year with 7 in the Bullpen, both should be rostered. They would provide us with some real pinch hitting power from both sides for late game matchups.

    8th Reliever
German, Avila, Banks, Santos, Middleton, Shaw, foster are battling for a temporary spot in our Pen.

German, Middleton, Avila haven't done enough IMO.
Banks, Santos, Foster and Shaw have all been solid. I think it'll be one of these 4 with the rest of the Pen looking like...

    Lopez
    Graveman
    Bummer
    Kelly
    Lambert
    Diekman
    Ruiz
    (Banks, Santos, Foster, Shaw)

The rest of the roster is set barring injury. Word is Hendriks claims he will be back in late May, but the expectation is sometime in June. Most rumors have Crochet coming back around the same time frame. Those are 2 massive BP additions for us, so I think we can get by with what we have for now. Davis Martin throws today, and he will be 1st in line out of Charlotte for spot starts. Sean Burke will be the next man up, and if Stiever can get back into the swing of things he will be our deep depth.

Sox have 3 scheduled off days in April, and you can probably figure on the usual 2-4 postponements early in the season…. Theoretically you can probably start with 12 pitchers, and shuttle a reliever or 2 up and down for DHs. A lot depends on the options statuses of the players in question.

Sadly it's our most active month for games.

True. It's just way too long of a season imo!

I like the fact that we only have 3 scheduled days off in April......Love the fact that we open a 4 gamer vs Houston. Lets see what this team is made of early.....

May has less scheduled off days, and we probably won’t get as many cancellations either.

So sorry, you are totally right. May is awful in string of games, but the softest part of our schedule IMO.
