Aaron Boone: Yankees will have shortstop ‘battle’ in spring training

Aaron Boone: Yankees will have shortstop ‘battle’ in spring training
    By Dan Martin
    January 19, 2023 11:06pm Updated

With spring training slated to open in less than a month, Aaron Boone said again that rookie Oswald Peraza and top prospect Anthony Volpe — along with incumbent Isiah Kiner-Falefa — will get serious looks before Opening Day.

“It will be a battle,” Boone said on YES Network’s “Hot Stove” on Thursday night.

People will freak out about this but it’s the right thing to say. It will be extremely disappointing if Peraza and/or Volpe can’t win it over IKF and also disappointing if they do but they stick with the vet.

Based on the fact they benched IKF in the playoffs. I see the writing on the wall that they’re ready for Peraza.

Awesome. Him saying that is a good thing. Basically leaves open any possibility. Good chance we are looking at one of the kids taking the spot outright

I also see the possibility of IKF moving over to 3B, although JD's glove was very good, his bat has slowed. IKF had a respectable slash: .278/.350/.333 OPS.683, little power, you do expect some from the corners.

This is just a gut feeling but since Peraza has been with the MLB club I think he may have a slight inside track to the starting job and its his for the taking. He has had all winter to tweak his game and get ready for MLB duty.

Not so much Volpe really because he may need a little more seasoning but more Peraza if he can't beat out IKF for the starting role I feel his trade value is going to take a hit if its due to performance that he isn't the starting SS.

I can't see that happening unless Donaldson is no longer on the roster. It sure as hell ain't like Kiner-Falefa's bat would be any sort of upgrade to even an end of his career Bringer of Rain.

JD may be moved, long shot but possible. I agree as long as JD is on the roster he will man 3B. However IKF was a GG 3B in 2020, he is a suitable replacement. He won't be confused with Machado or Arenado, but in a pinch he's better than most.

I would agree. If it's anyone it's going to be DJ and Cabrera probably gets some time there.

DJ was actually an better defender than JD last yr, they both had 7 OAA but DJ's was in far fewer reps. DJ has also said 3rd base was his best and most comfortable position

Maybe at this stage of his career. He has more games and 3 GG's at 2B. He has 1128 games at 2B and 190 at 3B. IKF is a GG at 3B, where is the logic in playing him at SS? If Peraza is the heir apparent at SS why not move IKF to 3B? Keep DJ as a utility guy and 2B.

DJ is a very capable 3B, no question. But why would you play two GG defenders out of position?

ps. Not questioning IF the Yankees play DJ at 3B, only the logic employed.

100% the right way to do it.

The bolded is my concern. I could see both kids out performing IKF and the Yankees still giving him the job

You guys all have pipe dreams with some of the suggestions or ideas you all come up with…

Think Cash and think Hal before making suggestions or ideas…

JD is stuck here! $29million is owed to him, nobody wants that albatross.

IKF will win the job easily after he has his best spring ever.

Yankees will have a slow start or IKF will start fumbling again and by May Cashman calls up Peraza to light a spark much like the same when he called up Cano in 2005 when the Yankees started off 12-19.

I agree. I will only say that if Peraza is sent down, all bets are off between him and Volpe. Whoever is performing better, will get the call
