    2023 NFL Draft

This might be the latest weíve started this thread in a very long time

    We have the following picks
    Round 1, Pick 13 overall
    Round 2, Pick 43 overall
    Round 3, Pick 74 overall
    Round 4, Pick 109 overall
    Round 5, Pick 140 overall
    Round 6, Pick 171 overall

Based on our current roster, I think weíll be focusing on interior offensive line, future LT

Iíve done fairly minimal research, but one guy I like is John Michael Schmitz, a C from Minnesota in the later rounds. Paris Johnson looks like a nasty tackle prospect Iíd strongly consider with out 1st

With that said, I did a PFF mock draft
    Traded #13, 112, and next yearís 4th for #16 and #47
With #16 I took Paris Johnson to be the future starting T
By snagging an extra #2 earlier in the draft, I traded #42 for Joel Bitonio (lol, I can dream right?)
Traded #47 for #52 and a few late round picks I traded earlier
With #52 I was thinking about a physical red zone mismatch and went with 6í7Ē Georgia TE Darnell Washington
Traded up to the last pick in the second round to get my Center, John Michael Schmitz

Also keep an eye on Henry Toío Toío, he sounds like a JD and Saleh pick. Trenton Simpson as well possibly

Assuming we sign a free agent QB, I like Paris Johnson Jr with the #13 pick if he's there. If not, assuming a top 5 player (like an enormous DT) doesn't drop to us, I trade down and draft Broderick Jones in the early 20s or O'Cyrus in the late 20s. I like to go C with John Michael Schmidt in the 2nd round, if he's available. If not, I still go center a little lower with Sedrick Van Plan. I also like LB Henry To'o'to'. Ideally by trading down from #13, we can snag a 2nd and pick him up as well in that round. It depends how the draft goes, but ideally, I'd like to acquire one more pick on a trade down and draft a C, G, OT, LB, S, DT and WR with the 7 picks.

If we arenít in position to draft a QB the organization lovesÖ trade back and acquire draft capital for the future and run ZW out there. Unless we can get a Rodgers or Lamar, there is no point trading for and/or signing a QB like Carr or Jimmy G if we want to contend. Look at the model for teams that have won or actually contend. You need to have a franchise QB on a rookie contract or you have a top tier QB period. Some teams have both of those options combined. Thatís the only proven strategy in the nfl.

I get it, it sucks to lose every year but thatís what happens when you miss on top picks like we have at QB. Hopefully ZW turns into something but if he doesnít we need those losses to get our guy on a rookie deal. Itís the best blue print for actually contending. Listen, if you want to be Minny or Dallas or the Giants then go ahead and get a Carr or someone like that. We will just get embarrassed by a legit top tier QB. It happens all the time. Dak and Kirk are good, top 12 guysÖ they will never win! If we ever want to contend we need to keep losing and acquire draft capital to finally get our franchise QB at the right cost.

The Rams won with Stafford. You can absolutely win with a top 15 QB.
    Flacco
    Dilfer
    McMahon
    Eli won 2
    Brad Johnson
    Jeff hostteler
    Mark Rypien
    Nick foles
Namath was not a great QB by any means.
This list goes on and depending how you rate a QB, could be long.

You can win a Super Bowl with a good/solid QB.

I don't think the jets have the money to get Rodgers or Lamar. I also think the ask from their teams will be prohibitive.
Carr and Jimmy G are the likely options. I like Jimmy but he's a walking injury. Carr apparently doesn't take criticism very well, which doesn't bode well for NYC.

At 13, will there be a QB they love? I doubt it. I completely agree with trading back. I am a huge fan of adding capital.

Add to all this, they need to sign Q. I mean, they could FT him but that never seems to lead to a good relationship.
It would be a way to get him for cheap for a couple years but would he sit?

From what I have read, it seems like with the right cuts, restructures... They could get to the 45-50 mil mark. Q will likely eat close to half of that. I have no idea how they sign a QB, 7 OL + another 10 or so position, players

JD has some serious work to do.

Stafford played like an elite QB the year that they won. The other guys you mentioned had stacked teams behind them and more importantly played in different eras where passing wasnít everything. Itís definitely not the consistent blueprint. Again, people hit the powerball but itís not the blueprint to get rich is it? If the Jets get a Carr or someone like that we will be in the worst position in the nflÖ stuck as a borderline wild card team. Look at what a Lawrence or Hurts can do to a franchise. We were close to Lawrence, we won a stupid game that cost us everything.

Again, I hope ZW with a new OC and healthy oline can become a franchise guy, but if he doesnít his losses will increase our chances of getting THE guy in the future. Thatís the model we need to follow.

We had chances at guys like Allen, Lamar, and Hurts in the past, we just blew the pick. Keep the model until you donít.

We canít pay a non elite qb and expect to contendÖ thatís just pure insanity

I guess where I disagree is that believe both Jimmy and Carr could play at an elite level. Not a top 5 qb but a top 10 qb.
It was post earlier but Carr's numbers if he were a jet for his career?
In all time passing numbers for the team, would rank
    1
    2
    3
    4
    6
    7

Namath would rank 5th. (Namath played a 14 game season, so if you add his average, he'd be 2nd, still giving Car the other top 7 spots.)

Think about this. If we just transferred Carr's numbers this year, 60.8%- 3500 yds, 24 tds and 14 ints, he would have been 6th all time and that is with missing 2 games.
If the Jets had a qb who had done that, my guess is they would have made the playoffs for sure.

I just don't believe you need a superstar QB to hold down a franchise. You need a very good one

I totally agree. I hope he can figure things out but if you start him, you lose the team. Players clearly don't like or respond to him right now.
I read Rodgers's comments on ZW and they were encouraging but also damning. He talked about ZW needing to have, humility. He doesn't. I think that is a big reason he stinks.

If the Jets didn't have a loaded Defense, I could see them playing Zach.

Here's an article on Aaron Rodgers salary cap, etc., which includes what the cap hit would be for an acquiring team. I think it looks reasonable, especially if the trade is made after June 2, 2023. In such a scenario, the Jets would still be able to draft and improve their team this year, prior to giving up 2 #1s to acquire Rodgers.

Just for fun, I did the mock draft simulator and intentionally did not pick a QB. I traded down from 13 and a later pick to 16 and Washinton's #1 for 2024, then traded down the 16 and a later pick to acquire the 18th pick and the Lions 2024 #1. If this scenario ever could come to fruition, we could acquire the 2 #1s we need to make the Rogers trade. For the record, in addition to the 2 #1s, I drafted the following:
    18. Brian Branch S Alabama
    57. Henry ToOToO LB Alabama (trade #43 down to the Giants at #57 and picked up the #126)
    126 Wanya Morris OT Oklahoma
    141 SirVocea Dennis LB Pittsburgh
    #172 Akheem Mesidor DT Miami

I beefed up the team with these picks and the defense would be amazing next year, but I possibly should have done more on the OL or picked up a WR later in the draft.

or how about this one with the same Rodgers scenario in the draft, but focusing on the OL

Trading down from #13 to #22, #24 and #28 with later picks to acquire Ravens #1, Denver #1 and Jacksonville #3 for next year and then drafting these 4 players:
    #28 O'Cyrus Torrence OG FL
#43 John Michael Schmitz OC Minnesota
    #110 Wanya Morris OT Oklahoma
#172 Ronnie Hickman S Ohio St

    Iíll take your second scenario!
Iím not going to comment on Rodgers or any rumored trade compensation as I donít want to derail this thread from the draft

If we can sign solid OL help, and sign Carr so we don't have to trade first rounders for Rodgers, any chance we go offense again and draft Quinton Johnston at 13 if he's there?

Wilson and Johnston on the outside with Moore in the slot would be dope. It'd be setting up Carr to have a possible great season like we just saw from Goff out of nowhere.

I agree. If they get the OL in really good shape and get one more WR, Carr could succeed. Many QBs could.
I think Rodgers would be a mistake. I wouldn't be angry or hate it but for the longterm, I think there are better ways to spend money and picks

I really think the trade compensation is not going to be outrageous for Rodgers
    Heís 39
GB canít afford him unless they tear apart the team
He does not want to be in GB anymore (in a rebuilding situation)
Heís got a HUGE contract that really enables him to dictate where he goes
GB wants to trade him to the AFC only

I think the Hackett hiring along with a good young team makes the Jets where Rodgers wants to go. I canít see him wanting to go to another AFC team
    Raiders are a mess
Tennessee maybe, but Iím not sure heíll love the WR room

Iím thinking 2024 1st rounder will be the highest theyíll get from us, or this yearís 1st for their 2nd. Perhaps a conditional pick in 2025 if he plays in 2024

I think there is a reasonably high chance they go after someone like QJ. In that scenario, they probably hold onto Duane Brown
