Embattled Rep. George Santos has claimed that reports and videos documenting him performing in drag are both “outrageous” and “categorically false.”

But nearly a dozen years ago, Santos himself appears to have confirmed that he participated in drag shows while he was a teenager living in Brazil.

A Wikipedia page accessed by POLITICO shows a user named Anthony Devolder — a Santos alias — writing that he “startted [sp] his ‘stage’ life at age 17 as an gay night club [sp] DRAG QUEEN and with that won sevral [sp] GAY ‘BEAUTY PAGENTS [sp].’”

The Wiki biography was last edited on April 29, 2011. It contains basic information that matches up with the newly sworn-in congressman, including Devolder being born on July 22, 1988, to a Brazilian family with a European background.

A proposed law that would make it a crime in Nassau to run for office under false pretenses, called the G.E.O.R.G.E. package - Get Egregious Officials Removed from Government Elections. It would include mandatory background checks and other safeguards, including barring anyone with foreign arrest warrants and makes lying about a candidates background a crime.

"Something insane but something necessary in the wake of George Santos," said Nassau Legislator Josh Lafazan.
This shouldn't be legislation that is passed just in his district btw. The fact that he was able to lie about seemingly every aspect of his life and still hold federal office is insane. I know he was voted in but he wouldn't have been had the proper vetting been done.

It does not keep the issue front and center. It is a meaningless bill that has no additional funding for police or assistance to the areas that you allege need security.

Anyone who uses "he was voted in" as justification for him remaining has just opened the door for any foreign asset to lie and make their way into government.

Let's check in on the 118th congress:

    https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-...itol-rcna66643

Among this month’s embarrassing Republican spectacles has been the sight of Rep. Troy Nehls, R-Texas, appearing on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show and touting the expansion of places where smoking is permitted in the U.S. Capitol as being “all about freedom.”

Good to see they're getting to work to better the lives of citizens across the country.

A lot of folks — not just the local Republicans — missed the ball on this one, including the national party, the local press, and the opposition Democrats.

This is Mike Pence's best chance to get back into politics. He was key on keeping Washington from getting involved in combatting smoking and holding up on the declarations of common sense that smoking causes cancer.

I don't think so. maga has taken over the GQP like a virus. I wouldn't be surprised if we start hearing them recycle the old lines from 70 years ago when they were saying doctors actually recommend smoking.

Let's check in on the 118th congress:

    https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/n...artisan-defeat

An amendment pushed by Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) to bar President Joe Biden from selling oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve crashed and burned in a massive bipartisan defeat Thursday.

The amendment failed 14-418, with only 14 Republicans in support. In announcing the amendment, Greene accused Biden of being a threat to the nation's national security and tricking and deceiving voters by pulling from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to lower gas prices. Evidently, not many other congressmen and congresswomen agreed or thought the amendment prudent.

Too many great people get passed because they don't have their degrees and too many get elected as they look good on paper. This is a no-brainer and should hopefully make government better.

I actually agree with this. Where I work many years ago, we had a job requirement that someone have a college degree. We were able to get the company to remove the requirement so we could hire one of our interns for a full time position. He was able to get the internship because he came from a program that we had worked with in the past for interns but not a full time position. I'm very proud to say that he's working as a senior networking engineer now. But he likely never would have gotten that opportunity if we didn't get that exception to hire him to an entry level full time job.

Happens all the time. I worked with a guy that had no degree but had EXTENSIVE electrical background thanks to the military. He struggled to find work because someone in HR was looking for degrees and looking for multiple years of experience working on something that had only existed for 18 months. HR does great, sometimes they need help. Ideally this makes government more efficient, I hope.

Let's check in on the 118th congress:

    https://truthout.org/articles/republ...cy-is-falling/

In a time when life expectancy in the U.S. is declining for the first time in decades and Americans can expect on average to enjoy even fewer years of retirement, Republicans are considering a radical plan to shrink the retirement window.

House Republicans have been working out the details of their deeply unpopular plan to cut Social Security and Medicare in order to deepen poverty and shackle people to the labor force further into old age.

The party is considering a proposal to raise the retirement age for Social Security to 70, per The Washington Post, which means that workers and retirees would have to work an additional 3 to 4 years to receive full benefit. This proposal would mostly affect younger workers who have not yet started to receive benefits from the program.

Under this proposal, Americans could expect to be able to enjoy retirement for only about six years, if the most recent life expectancy estimates hold: In 2021, the average life expectancy in the U.S. dropped to 76 years and one month.

This is two years and nine months less than the pre-pandemic average, which is a larger drop than other wealthy countries had experienced in the same period of time. It is also already harder to retire in the U.S. than in other countries, as older Americans have a higher poverty rate than those in other wealthy countries; by contrast, over a million people in France are striking to protest the government’s proposal to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 to qualify for a full government pension.

The GOP is also considering a proposal for panels that would recommend changes to Social Security and Medicare, which are at risk of facing solvency issues in coming decades thanks in part to Republicans’ efforts to chip away at the program for years. This supposed solution would likely be crafted to ensure that the panel would suggest cuts to the program — but could be done in a way that makes it seem as though the GOP isn’t directly responsible for the cuts.

Cutting Social Security and Medicare could have disastrous consequences for middle- and lower-class Americans, who are already having trouble affording basic expenses like medical care. Social Security is the single most effective anti-poverty program by far in the U.S., even with payouts that are still too low to prevent poverty for many. Medicare is similarly an extremely effective anti-poverty program, and, importantly, helps millions of Americans afford medical care that would otherwise be out of reach.

“We have no choice but to make hard decisions,” said Rep. Kevin Hern (R-Oklahoma), who leads the Republican Study Committee, the largest House GOP caucus which endorsed the retirement benefit age last year. “Everybody has to look at everything.”

Democratic lawmakers have said that Republicans are focusing on Social Security solvency because they think cutting the program under President Joe Biden could hurt Democrats.
