We went to the Cedar Rapids Kernels' game this afternoon and saw the Kernels win 4-2 with their pitchers allowing only 1 hit (along with 6 walks). The Kernels' starter, Alejandro Hidalgo only lasted 1.1 innings, giving up 2 runs on 1 hit and 6 walks (including 5 in the first inning when Peoria scored both of their runs without benefit of a hit). John Stankiewicz struck out 4 in 3.2 perfect innings to pick up the win. Tanner Schobel was 2/3 with a double and 3 RBI. Willie Joe Garry, Jr was 2/3 with 2 scored and a stolen base on a pickoff attempt. He is very fast and can play CF pretty well. If these kids can improve their hitting and stay consistent, they can move up
the depth charts. Emmanuel Rodriguez did not play today. I hope to see him play later this summer.
I was impressed by a German kid the Kernels have on the mound. Niklas Rimmel can throw hard and has decent control. He struck out 2 in 2 perfect innings. He was on the German roster in the WBC.
I thought that Hidalgo's arm was dragging a bit today, as nearly all of his pitches missed high over the plate. The Chiefs' hitters seemed to see what I did and they just waited for him to throw a strike before they swung the bats. I'd like to see him pitch again this summer to see if he can correct this problem.
