Yankees have offer on table for Aaron Judge: ‘on the clock’

Brian Cashman: Yankees have offer on table for Aaron Judge: ‘on the clock’
    By Mark W. Sanchez
    November 17, 2022 11:49pm Updated

Aaron Judge, proud owner of a new MVP trophy, also has an offer from the Yankees to stare at.

Brian Cashman acknowledged for the first time Thursday night that the club has extended another contract proposal to its freshly minted Most Valuable Player — the first publicly known offer since spring training.

I read that Doc, I am confused by the "on the clock" comment. Are they implying they've given him a timeframe to accept or refuse? Or is it simply they have an offer so the game has begun?

I was puzzled by that as well. Can we attribute that to "poetic license" or literary embellishment by the author?

    I read as game on.

    Here's what the article says:

"Brian Cashman acknowledged for the first time Thursday night that the club has extended another contract proposal to its freshly minted Most Valuable Player — the first publicly known offer since spring training.

We’re on the clock. So we’re certainly not going to mess around,” the Yankees general manager said from this year’s Covenant House Sleep Out at Silverstein Family Park, where he was set to sleep outside to raise awareness and funds for homeless youth. “So of course we’ve made another offer.”"

"We", meaning "the Yankees" are on the clock and have a limited time to sign him before he bolts or the winter meetings or spring training or the start of the season. Nowhere does it say Judge is on the clock.

I take this as a figure of speech, meaning "time is of the essence," such as "we're under the gun," (though you can't mention guns in a flippant manner these days).

But you just did!!! I am offended!!!

I read it the same as you after seeing it again. When I read the article wasn't sure but I agree with all your colloquialisms

I would also see it as, we are at work. We are doing our job so we are on the clock

On the clock probably means the Yankees have exclusive rights to entertain Judge for 14 days and then he is released to the rest of the league if no deal is struck.

I would suggest not giving much weight to what Twatman says about Judge. My understanding is that Hal and Judge are exclusively negotiating on the Yanks side. Plus, Judge won't deal with Cashman because of the leaks last yr. Accrding to the sources I've talked to, Judge has zero interest in doing anything with Twatman

People around the Yanks are saying this is by for the most they have seen of Hal and he desperately wants to change the narrative around the Yanks. All those people are telling me that they expect Hal do go into the 270-290m range for this yr. He want fans to know if the Dodgers and Mets can have a payroll approaching 300m.

They have 75m coming off the books next yr, so that payroll figure would likely be 1yr

Hal wants the 3 kids, Volpe, Peraza and Cabrera being big parts of next yr. I'm being told those 3, Arias and Spencer Jones are the only untouchable spec, unless it's for a TORP of star position player well under 30 and more than 1yr of control. I won't believe it till i see it, but from what he's telling people Peraza, Volpe and Cabrera will all be in a competition for 2nd base and SS in ST. Whoever wins will get the job out of ST

I'm excited by this new, It seem when Japanese 1st baseman and HR king Murikami comes stateside, the will be there top target whenever he's available. Even if it's next yr, they believe they could trade RIzzo and not have to eat any money. Murikami is said to want to play in the biggest market to capitalize on his fame, No better place than NYC. Expect the Yankees to be the top bidder for him when he comes over. They believe bringing him in would add 100m plus to their bottom-line and he's the perfect age to be a part of a "new core'

Cabrera is 22, Peraza 21, Volpe 21, Dom just turning 20, Jones is 21 and Murikami is 22. U add a couple pitchers and thats a hell of a core.

Gil is back throwing and has refined a CB and CU, so he could be a rotation option early next yr

not sold on cabrera being a full time player and peraza and volpe are unproven in the major we do not know what they will become.. talking a huge risk on unproven talent when this is a win now team.. of course if judge does not come back then trying the rookies will be fine since this team might not even make the playoffs next year..

So it's a win now team with Judge but if there's no judge they may not make the playoffs. Ok, makes sense.

Being a win now team doesn't hinge on one singular player. If you lose that player and suddenly can't even make the playoffs then it's not a "win now" team.

Dodgers in the mix for Judge. They just created 100 mil in cap space and are sitting at 168 + Kershaw who will probably get around 20, so 188. 40 mil to judge, would still have them under the luxury tax.

Did your aunt's cousins friends housekeeper tell u that or did you lose that source?

Hal said they have all the money they need to sign Judge and improve the rest of the team.. the money isn't going to be an issue.

Judge had a "very productive meeting" with the Giants. Met with all the FO and ownership.

I won't be surprised if he leaves. As I said, If they loved it, should a put a ring on it.

The offer Day cited is good but they should have gone 8 for 320 out of the gate.
