MLB investigating whether Mets, Yankees communicated improperly on Aaron Judge.

Per Ken Rosenthal from the athletic

Major League Baseball is investigating whether comments attributed to Mets sources about the team’s reluctance to pursue free-agent outfielder Aaron Judge constitute a violation of baseball’s collective bargaining agreement.

An article published on the Mets’ television network’s web site Nov. 3 said the Mets would not bid against the Yankees for Judge. Details in the story caught the attention of the Players Association, which asked the Commissioner’s Office to investigate whether improper communication occurred between the respective owners of the clubs, according to sources briefed on the situation profile bidding war.”

Officials from MLB and the Players Association declined to comment, and the Mets, Yankees and Astros did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Three times in the late 1980s, independent arbitrators ruled the owners worked together to avoid bidding competitively on free agents. A settlement of the three cases resulted in the owners agreeing to pay the players $280 million. The players later alleged the owners also engaged in collision in 2002 and 2003, and the owners agreed to pay the players $12 million without an admission of guilt as part of the 2006 CBA." Crane said of Verlander. “He’s looking at the comp, which I think there’s only one or two … J.V.’s probably got a few years left, and he wants to make the most of it. I think he’s going to test the market on that.”

In theory, Crane’s remarks could scare off potential suitors for Verlander, depressing his market. Crane has assumed a greater role in baseball operations since the Astros were penalized in Jan. 2020 for illegal electronic sign stealing, according to sources familiar with his operation of the club. The team is currently without a GM following Crane’s decision last Friday to part with James Click

Not sure what the Yankees have to do with a Mets article.

    But here we are.

I wonder if something like this could complicate the Yankees signing Judge.

It looks like the MLBPA is trying to suggest collusion. That based on the SNY article, Cohen and Steinbrenner had talks about Judge's impending FA and not bidding against each other for his services. If the MLBPA can prove that, yeah the Mets and Yankees would probably be fined and have to surrender draft picks.

I did not read that article. Wish they would have sourced it in this story. Interesting, gonna be real hard to prove.

Yeah, even if true, one word vs the other. Most likely, much ado about nothing.

But it's definitely noteworthy. Mets and Yankees working together?

It might have happened. Cohen doesn't go after Judge and Steinbrenner doesn't go after Diaz and DeGrom. We make out better on the deal, because we never really had a shot at Diaz. You are all also right that it is hard to prove, especially if both teams are initially focused on their own free agents. It will also be contradicted, at least against lesser players, since we have already reached out to Nimmo and the Mets could still reach out to Taillon.

It looks to me like the writer took a bit of liberty... and got parts wrong...

Fact.. Judge is going to be a rich man by ST...
Fact... If the Yanks really want him and have not put a line in the sand.. they will have him... and right now, the only line I could see.. years.. not $$$$/year..

My feeling on this.. The reality is that Cohen can't afford the price tag and is not going to even try. With Max and Degrom out there too... adding Judge to the mix will blow up the team salaries for years...

Of course the Union sees collusion everywhere and wants everything to come to that (they made a ton of $$$$ in the past with that)...

If the yanks truely want degrom.. they will kick the tires... but the reality is.. his age is going to hurt his market.. he's at that magic age 35 where anything more than 1 year deals can become bad news... add in the fact that he's spent much of the last few years on the DL (or whatever TF they call it today) and even a 1 year deal can get sketchy...

The pitchers are insane. Cohen gave Scherzer $43.3 Million per year for 3 years, so now DeGrom wants at least that and so does Verlander. However, the real crazy thing is that Rodon is now saying that he wants $35 million. Good luck to that.

Cohen can't afford the price? Really. With a net worth north of $16B, yes billion with a capital B, he could afford to buy the Yankees, let alone afford Judge's contract. He blew by the luxury tax threshold as if it didn't exist. He is determined to buy a winner....and he will.

Who said his net worth meant anything... at some point, the bottom line will be a factor... and Aaron is going to really affect someones bottom line soon. Hell, even the Yanks draw a line at some levels...

As far as buying a winner... How many times did that work for George? He was known to try to BUY the winner... sadly.. it really only worked once... even the 4 wins in the 90's weren't him buying.. the first one with with a bunch of has-beens and cast offs... funny how when he really tried to buy... we started losing them again.. So, go ahead and try to buy a winner.. history says.. you'll have a good team... champion.. probably not!

Cohen call afford any salary he wants to, the only thing holding him back are his baseball operations people telling him how badly the penalties could hold them back in the coming yrs. Cohen is also a business guy that knows how much money Judge would bring in. Cohen is like George was in the early 2000's, if he wanted them the price didn't matter . Cohen's car collection is worth more than the contract Judge is going to get, money wouldn't be an issue

That said, I highly doubt Cohen wants to get into a war with Hal over their star players
