My biggest fear WAS and I do mean was, that Ohtani would get traded and never make it to free agency. So, this information being out there is VERY smart on Cohen’s part. No agent is going to let their play sign before having the opportunity to talk to Cohen. If for no other reason then to drive the price up. That said, I do not expect the Mets to trade for him. They will wait for next offseason and sign him. Imo, the only way Ohtani doesn’t sign here is because he simply doesn’t want to be here. Cohen will offer the most money, period.

I do absolutely think it’s possible he gets traded. I just don’t think he signs a long term contract without at least involving Cohen

So if you were the Mets, would you trade Alvarez, Baty, and Tidwell (and maybe more) during this season, say in May or even June, for Ohtani as a rental, and you don't even get a draft pick as compensation if he walks at the end of the season?

No because I believe we’ll be contenders every year and we can afford the $500M. Those are the 2 reasons I used in my quoted comment for a team to overpay for a trade deadline deal

Smart move as he would have been a FA after the 2024 season. Now they have him through his age 34 season (age 35 if they exercise the club option for a 5th year) at a solid salary. At that point, they'll presumably be able to move on from him if he's not the same player without having had signed him until 37, 38, or 39 years old.

Next should be Alonso and when that is done , they will have their 4 key players locked up for awile , Alonso, McNeil, Lindor and Nimmo. Plus Diaz

Yeah and if Alvarez or Baty have really good rookie years the Mets should do the same with them similar to what the Braves did with Harris, Albies, Strider and Acuna.

Let’s see how that translates. It’s always good to see these guys get in better shape but I’m always curious as to how their body adapts at the end of it all.
