I have to agree. He can compete, as one would hope anyone on the roster would / should. BUT considering how things ended in 2nd half I think the job may be Cabrera's to lose.

I think Cashman is employing GM speak. He can not tarnish Hick's rep further, if he intends to get any value he must sell him as a starter.

I know his BABIP was really high in AAA and the swing need to be shortened a little so he doesn't get beat by high velo FBs up in the zone, but is that really enough of a reason to not give him a shot when we know how good the defense and speed can be?

Kepler hit .227/.318/.348/.666 with 9hrs and 18 2bs and 43 RBI's in 115 games and had a WAR just above 2. Flo is the better defender, but is it really unrealistic that he could at least put up as good if not better numbers.

McCarthy hit .274/.340/.418/.759 which is a higher avg than Flo will probably have, but McCarthy doesn't have the greatest BB Savant numbers. Is he really worth a Torres plus? when we have a similar player in Flo? I certainly don't.

I'm really starting to think, with the current market prices going with Flo/Cabrera and maybe some kind of RH platoon would be best until they have a clearer picture of what they really want/need in LF.

Mets concerned with Carlos Correa’s physical. Story with @DanHayesMLB: https://theathletic.com/4033222/2022...ical-concerns/
Cohen certainly backed himself into a corner when he announced the deal before having the medicals done. I don't think he can back out at this point, even if he wanted to(not saying he does)

Correa’s surgically repaired right leg is the issue, with the club having apprehensions over the integrity of the leg.

In 2014 while with High-A Lancaster, Correa suffered a fractured fibula on a hard slide into third base, which required a plate to be surgically implanted. Correa, now 28, has not missed time at the Major League level with any leg injuries.

Cut to trade deadline. Yankees in third place but still have a shot to get a WC spot.
Bye-bye to the top 5 specs

I just think this FO is chicken to play youth. Now that Hal has spent on Judge and Rodon, he will be cheap and use Hicks, JD and IKF.

I would't be shocked if the Dilfo is on the team over Peraza. I have that little faith in them doing the smart thing
Dilfo is on an MILB deal and the bigger base salary people are reacting to only kicks in if he makes the 26man roster. He's purely a depth piece.

Maybe Hicks does stay, JD probably stays also, but i will be absolutely blown away, shocked and pissed if IKF is the opening day SS. If they go back to him after he was so terrible in the playoffs they had to play Cabrera and Peraza at SS in the ALCS, something would have to go horrifically wrong. Even if Peraza got hurt, I would be very, very surprised if Cabrera or even Volpe didn't get that job out of ST.

No one any of my guys has talked to from the Yanks wants or thinks IKF will be at SS going forward. That has been repeatedly been said to us by multiple people tied to the Yanks.

I completely agree with you about LF, it reeks of Cashman over thinking himself and I think he's boxed himself into a corner that he can't get out of right now. He's even more stuck because what they really want if for Dom to take over in LF, but isn't ready yet. The current available guys aren't a big enough upgrade over Hicks, Cabrera or Flo to justify giving up multiple top 10 specs IMO. They just aren't going to give up 2 of Dom, Peraza and Volpe

One other thing that gives me hope about them playing some of the youth coming is that Judge has expressed thats what he would like to see. Judge wanted input into the roster going forward and Hal gave it to him. Judge telling Hal he wanted Rodon played a big part of why they got him. I believe based on what i've been told is Judge is definitely going to get some input into that roster and he enjoys playing with the kids, so I guess we'll see how good that info/sources is

We're also being told, if Correa's deal falls through, the Yanks would be very, very interested in a short term deal. Hal would apprently willing to go into the Cohen tax level if they we're able to get Correa on a 1-2yr deal

The issue is his lower right leg/ankle that was surgically repaired yrs ago that already has arthritis

we'll see what happens, but Correa would like to be a Yankee and the only way the Yanks are interested is short term and that may open up a pathway for him to the Yanks.

Obviously the Mets are still favored to keep him, but if that doesn't work, it could get interesting

It's not complaining. It's stating what I think will happen. If Hicks is on the team, they will give him every opportunity to regain his starting role. He always has a good OBP. I think that will be the deciding factor. It benefits the Yankees to have Hicks starting. Worst case is he's good and then they have an easier time moving him.
They will tell us how he just needed a reset. If he sucks, they will go with another OF.

I have said, I don't like it but I would rather they roll with him and allow someone to take the job, than trade for any of the names mentioned.
Aside from Reynolds or. Happ, I would rather they give hicks his shot. He is actually the perfect placeholder.

Cohen kind of back himself into a corner. I dont know what the logistics of it is because he commented on the deal before it was officially signed. Sounds like the Mets are still likely to bring him in but the details of the contract would obviously be reworked. Might be something where they get him on a shorter term deal or there is specific language in the contract regarding injury.

Ramon Laureano ( who they had interest in at the deadline) is emerging as a possibility for LF

Is that really an upgrade over Hicks/Flo/ Cabrera ? If we're going dumpster diving as it would appear, just give Flo the shot he earned

we were told something similar about the Mets still likely being the favorites to still get a deal done, but that the Mets plan on trying to re work the deal to a much shorter term.

If that becomes the case and he becomes "available again" the Yanks would be very interest in a short term deal with him and Hal would give the approval to spend over the 3rd tier

Rodon and Montas are upgrades to Monty and Taillon. No Chapman is a huge upgrade in the BP and Kanhle provides a nice upgrade to Green. I also think full season in defined role will help Lo, King, Holmes and Marinaccio. When you factor in Kanhle and Wandy is a hell of a backend of the BP.

Full seasons from Bader, Cabrera and Peraza are upgrades from last yrs. As u have said multiple times, so much of what the are hoping for is that Cabrera, Peraza and Volpe. Thats very, very true and a huge if, but if those 3 play to the expected levels they are upgrade over what we got offensively from Marwin, IKF and JD.

Has the offense improved enough ? no it hasn't. That said, this is still a defensively elite team, with excellent defense. With elite pitching and defense like we have, we'll always have a chance to win IMO. Run prevention is going to be even more important with the shift going away.

I agree that we need to improve LF and i really don't want to see a stop gap either. With the current asking price of Reynolds, especially after what the Jays gave up for Varsho ( was told this morning AZ asked for both Torres and Peraza, which the Yanks said hell no to) it would be shocking if that Reynolds deal got done.

As much as i dislike it, I think it's very, very likely we see either Kepler or some combo of Hicks, Cabrera and Flo till Dom/Jones/ Pereira/ Wells to be ready or make a deal for an upgrade before the deadline.
It is just a whole lot of maybes here. Rodon is big individual upgrade for sure, I don't think he is makes a major difference as a team though because the offense is the issue in the postseason and there is a chance the offense could be worse than last year. Maybe Montas is an upgrade but we don't know. He benefited from a pitchers park in Oakland and we have seen how some pitchers can't handle NY before. Not saying he won't be better but we do not know. Peraza and Volpe both started incredibly slow last year, they are not sure things to help next year. We can hope for these guys to be upgrades, but my point is they didn't add any sure things and the #1 concern (offense) arguably looks worse.

Guys making starting salary typically begin the season in a starting role regardless if there are better options. There's a chance they'd give Hicks another chance to sink or swim because of how much he is making rather than cut bait and eat the salary. Same thing that is likely to happen with Donaldson.

I agree that Florial should get a chance. What is annoying is that he should've already had an extended chance last season which would've given us a better idea now about what he can be.

    1) Bader is a FA after the year
    2) even in a “breakout” AAA season Florial had definite platoon splits
    3) our top OF prospects all have questions about staying in CF vs moving to a corner
    4) Oswaldo Cabrera is a better lefty hitter than righty
    5) Hicks has a bad attitude to where team might view him as addition by subtraction in the clubhouse even if he still makes baseball sense here with his OBP

Laureano, with 3 years of team control, definitely makes some sense to me. It’s a good layer of depth long term.

Trade for Laureano, dump Hicks, move IKF (since Donaldson is tougher to move), give SS to Peraza

    C Trevino
    1B Rizzo
    2B Torres
    3B Donaldson
    SS Peraza
    LF Cabrera
    CF Bader
    RF Judge
    DH Stanton

Bench of catcher, DJ, Laureano and Florial

Bader has serious platoon splits so let Florial take some starts in CF. Laureano can play LF for Cabrera against lefties and when Cabrera is needed at other spots.

Beyond this year you have him as depth in case Dom, Florial and/or Jones are busts
