Day, the problem is the Yankees try to emulate the Rays and those other teams who do not have the capital to get what’s required to build a lineup or rotation. The Yankees need to scrap the farm crap and start building a roster with proven players. And maybe every 3 years you can sneak in a Peraza. But hearing the hype doesn’t do anything. For example. All I heard about was that Peraza is the man. He should start at SS. April 1 came around and where was Peraza? He was not the starting SS. A proven player was. But in reality Correa or Seager should have been the SS not IKF whatever the fkc his name is. Machado should have been the 3rd basemen instead of JD….Harper should have been in the OF instead of Gallo.

And our kids always have some sort of Joba rules BS attached to them. I’d rather watch the Rays and their kids as they do correctly.

The Yankees go half and half. You either go all in or don’t.

So much to unpack when you discuss whether to keep prospects or trade them for veterans. Under George Steinbrenner, he traded Fred McGriff for Dale Murphy, because the Yankees wanted a LH reliever. The Blue Jays rated McGriff as a cross between Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio. Not a good trade.

Also, there is luck involved in making trades depending on position eligibility etc. Steinbrenner wanted David Ortiz, but did not trade for him because he had Nick Johnson and had nowhere to play him. This is similar to Bryce Harper. Yankees had Stanton and it would have been tough to fit him in.

Harper's great and perhaps it was a mistake not getting him, but the first year of his contract, he was on the DL when he hurt himself running over 1B and this past year, he needed Tommy John surgery and decided to postpone it until after the season and could only DH. Again, with Stanton on the team, the Yankees might have just advised him to have the surgery and pack it in until next year. As it is, there is no timetable for his return next season.

On 3/2/19 Harper signed a $330 Million contract with the Phillies. Not including his surgery on his UCL in the last week or so, here is a list of his injuries since he signed:

    DATE INJURY
    6/25/22 Thumb
    6/18/22 Blister
    6/1/22 Forearm
    5/15/22 Elbow
    6/26/21 Foot
    6/15/21 Back
    5/25/21 Forearm
    5/15/21 Shoulder
    5/3/21 Wrist
    4/28/21 Face
    4/17/21 Lower back
    9/20/20 Lower back
    9/6/19 Hand
    8/18/19 Dehydration

They are trying to get back to what actually works..a mix of homegrown and signings.

Just going out and spending doesn’t work either. If you really believe in the kids you have in the minors, you have to make sure some of them have somewhere to play. And just because a guy is out there, doesn’t mean he’s worth the money, whether you have it or not

Would you trade Player A for Player B?

Player A RH with 2 years of control and $9.8 million salary for 2023:

SUMMARY WAR AB H HR BA R RBI SB OBP SLG OPS OPS+

    2022 4.1 526 135 24 .257 73 76 10 .310 .451 .761 114

    Career 11.5 2098 556 98 .265 290 310 36 .331 .455 .785 114

Player B SH with 1 year of control and $10.6 million salary for 2023:

SUMMARY WAR AB H HR BA R RBI SB OBP SLG OPS OPS+

    2022 4.4 573 155 17 .271 72 72 9 .342 .440 .781 119

    Career 11.0 2127 530 104 .249 305 308 37 .339 .460 .798 113

    Eerily similar stats.

So Torres for either Happ or Reynolds? I am guessing Happ because I was staring at Reynolds stats yesterday and his career was higher.

I don't do that trade. I think it is lopsided. Player A has more value than player B.

If it is Happ and Torres, I would do it if the Cubs took JD. So they get an extra year of control with Torres but have to buy it.

The stats are very similar, so we'd have to factor more. Happ plays a position of need while Torres plays a position where the Yankees have both internal options and external(free agents). Torres has youth on his side and an extra year of control.

Personally, I do it because I think Torres should go as part of a "culture change." He is a low IQ player IMO and doesn't seem to work hard or has a lack of focus. He has regressed and gives away far too many non-competitive ABs. He makes up for it to an extent with his pure talent, but he seems like he will always be a very inconsistent player. He will do enough to be a good player, but also leave you incredibly frustrated.

Happ I would take a shot on because he is a switch hitter which would be nice to have in the lineup, he is good in LF (13 defensive runs saved in 2022), and has a solid mix of all around skill.

I totally agree about Torres IQ vs Happ and position of need. But that year of control and youth has to play a role for me. It the Cubs took JD or even Hick's contract with Torres, I would do it in a heartbeat.

Also, if I am not mistaken, Torres was part of the Miller trade to the Cubs. So not only would it be a change of scenery but a return home

Kinko and Eagles, you have both presented the argument perfectly. We'd be giving up a year of extra value but would be enacting a culture change for our team and would save us from having to sign Benintendi to an inflated contract and could spend that money on pitching.

Obviously, if you could throw JD int the deal or Hicks or half of either contract, it would work. It might also work if the Cubs threw in a reliever or prospect.

I'm sure u remember, but I wanted Happ badly at the deadline. I'd take him for Torres

My question though is if DJ is hurt, we don't resign Benny, who bats leadoff? Judge should be batting 3rd more than leading off. Bader?

I'm sure eventually it will be one of Dom, Volpe or Peraza
