So Torres is playing 2nd base in the WBC for the D.R. which means we should see Volpe get tons of reps there and Peraza should see the majority of reps at SS.

Probably not smart for Torres to be giving Volpe a running shot at stealing his job. I could see it playing out where Torres comes back and he's on a different team.

Now if we could do the same with IKF

Come April Torres will be the starting 2b for the New York Yankees.

    I agree.
However, it could actually be a rare occasion when the FO gets it right. Maybe they figured that the WBS is just as good, if not better, at getting guys in playing shape. So they can get Torres ready for the season and give opportunities to Peraza and Volpe (and all the other MIFs) and really get a good feel for them.

Worst case? They find out that Peraza and Volpe can hold down SS and 2B. Then they trade Torres. If one of those guys shines and the other needs time, Torres is ready to go and in shop.

IKF? I still think they force him on us. I think Peraza and Volpe need near perfect STs to win that job. Boone has said that they rate IKF as a great defender. Cashman said the same.
Hopefully Sabean and Minaya can change their tune and get IKF out of there or at least relegated to the bench

The only way he isn't is if both Peraza and Volpe crush ST. I don't think that happens. But if it does? Torres could absolutely be gone.

I understand your thought process but some of you on here ignore Cashmanís thought process. Most of you say WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN but most donít read Cashman very well.

Torres is getting closer to free agency, He is entering prime years. Cashman is not going get rid of Torres because of that. He wants the Yankees to benefit from it. And Volpe is not going to be the 2b in April. And as an example, Jeter got a huge break because Tony Fernandez was injured. If he was never injured I highly doubt Jeter starts the 1996 season as the starting SS. I donít care how good a spring he could of had. Now this spring the only way Torres is not the starting 2b would be from an injury. If healthy he will get one last opportunity. Cashman takes these seasons as a true marathon and never gets ahead of himself with speculation. He is very patient with players only jettisons them out when opportunity exists and a fair match it out there. Gallo should had traded last offseason but he gave him one last opportunity and eventually it didnít work out so he was then traded. Torres did not have a horrible season and actually improved from the 2021 season. Cashman will let it play out for a while with him IMO.

Mush, I said at the end of the year the yankees starting lineup on opening day, would field Hicks, JD and IKF.
I still think that is the case.

In an ideal world, Peraza and Volpe tear up ST, Flo/Dunham/Dom have fantastic STs and they decide to trade two of, Torres/IKF/JD and Hicks.
I would love that and I think most of us would welcome that.

My fear is based on this FO and their track record of, toeing the company line
They won't let Peraza have the job unless he is lights out. They will send him down to save, service time and give IKF to prove how "great" he is.
Hicks will get the job in LF because, "he's a vet. He's been here. He will figure it out. He had a down year and will rebound because the skills are there"...
    ...
    ...
    ...
Jd will be at third because his "talent didn't just disappear".

Cashman will shove his acquisitions down the fans throats with the hope they even slightly rebound. That way he's vindicated.

The FO is no longer concerned with winning. They are concerned with being right.

Ya I don't see any way Volpe is the starting 2Bman. It will be Gleyber unless they trade him.

ďThe team has also kept its eye on the bullpen market while exploring possibilities of trading a number of players, including Hicks, Donaldson, second baseman Gleyber Torres and shortstop Kiner-Falefa.Ē-Cashman

Devi was the only question mark I felt about that. It also took me a few minutes to see his name.

He's been posting videos of himself pitching on IG. It's hard to tell much from an IG video without velocity numbers but the ball looks like it's really coming out of his hands hard. Wouldn't be surprised if he is sitting upper 90's in short spurts. I'm hoping for a second Jonny Lasagna this year. Could be a huge addition to the pen.

Well, everybody else is pretty much untradable. Those mentioned are the 4 that would get traded if they had a crummy 1st half. I highly doubt they move in the Spring unless Cashman is offered a knee buckler.

This would be a perfect start to the season. Trade Torres while he has value and let some combination of Volpe, Cabrera and DJ man second.
I don't think anybody will take Donaldson unless we eat 75% of the contract (which we should) but Cash won't do that.
    Same with Hicks.
Why I don't understand is why hang on to IKF? The fans have gotten in his head (and we know what happens to good players once the Bronx gets in their heads) and there are a number of teams that need a serviceable SS or third baseman. Don't forget this guy was a Gold Glover at third. And he makes contact. He has value. Just not in the Bronx.
Peraza is already a better SS than him. Way better. And Cabrera is a better backup, so there's absolutely no reason to keep IKF.
I think trading a combination of Torres and IKF could net us decent enough pitching prospects to put in a package for Reynolds or at the very least land us some bullpen studs.
I just don't understand why the FO can't read the obvious signs. When a player withers in the Bronx, move him while he still has value. Don't wait until he's destroyed. Hicks probably couldn't fetch a crate of gatorade, now. He could have before. Many players resurrect themselves once they leave the Bronx.

The sense is that the Yankees would love to see Peraza resoundingly win the job this spring, which would allow them to shift Kiner-Falefa into more of a utility role and provide Volpe with additional development time.

I made the word "resoundingly", stand out because it's been my fear. Even if he plays better than IKF, I could see them giving IKF the job because Peraza "didn't do enough" to unseat the incumbent.

    On that note

    https://www.pinstripealley.com/2023/...curacy-uzr-drs

Good read. Basically, IKF has fantastic range, a mediocre, at best glove and a crap, inaccurate arm.
So the Yankees "metrics" can show him to be well above average if they take into account, range. So they essentially say, "he gets to balls others don't, so if he can get a few outs from that, it makes him above average" and ignore the routine plays he misses

Doesn't matter how well they do, they will not displace Torres on day 1 unless he is hurt.
Time to double down on the 'Spects!
