For whatever reason, he's been awful. Injury...throwing 75 mph pitches middle/middle...l just don't know. But he's averaged 4+ innings his last 40 plus starts. To me, that's not a small sample size. Maybe for a 23 year old it is, but he's not a youngster. It would be great if he can slide in to the rotation at some point. I just don't see it happening. Careers eventually come to an end. Some sooner than later.
So at the ASB in 21’ he just forgot how to pitch? Lost it all at once for no reason at all. At 31 years old he was going along fine and just fell off the face of the earth. Couldn’t locate any longer, couldn’t do anything. And this was not a result of an injury of any kind in your mind. So, why would he just lose it? He never threw hard so loss in velocity shouldn’t be a huge deal. So now he can’t hit his spots any longer? Now he can’t outthink hitters? Why should his era be 4.50 if completely healthy? What is more likely, suddenly he became a bum overnight for no reason at all or he has been battling aches and pains. I am fine with your opinion he won’t be healthy. If he isn’t, I agree he won’t be very good or useful. But I respectfully disagree with your opinion that even if he is healthy he will have a 4.50 era. Why should he. What is his career era? Why, if healthy, can’t he be close to that? He isn’t that old. This entire discussion reminds me so much of the one we had about Zobrist after 2017, when you had him finished. I remember I kept saying he isn’t done until he is healthy and sucks. And what happened? He had a very good 2018. Of course, if they did what you wanted, that year wouldn’t have been with the Cubs. You has him finished.

I wonder if they might decide to drop Hosmer and just go with Rios, and let him play 1B, especially if they decide not to put Suzuki on IL.. Wisdom can start at 3B, and Mancini in RF til then

Gomes, Madrigal, Torrens, and Mastrobuoni will be on the bench..

I would be fine with letting Hosmer go. I have been saying that the last few days. They signed Hosmer before signing Mancini and Ríos.’Maybe getting those guys makes Hosmer expendable. I doubt it does, but I do hope so.

I dunno, sounds like the cuts have already been announced on Monday. Suzuki missing time makes Hosmer more necessary IMO because Mancini/Wisdom may play some RF. Cubs need someone to DH too, which probably will usually be one of Rios, Mancini, Wisdom etc.
