Not surprised at all. He did not do a good job with this team at all. They need to change their offensive philosophy quickly, though. Running McCaffrey up the gut time and again isn't the answer.
It wouldn't hurt to roll with Darnold as the starter either. I don't think he's good, but every time I've seen Baker throw this year his passes all seem to take a dive at the end. They never seem to hit the receiver on target and the receiver always seems to need to dive for it.
I threw this out there to Steeler fans.
If Tomlin were ok with Carolina, and Tepper (former Steelers part owner) wants him, Trading him to Carolina would be one of the few ways I’m ok with moving on from Tomlin.
But it’s not going to happen. 1st losing season in Pittsburgh since 03, and trending to our first top 10 pick (not traded for) since 1990 and people lose their minds.
He was terrible

Rhule was a great talker, but you can only talk so much before everyone gives up on you. His biggest downfall was playing QB musical chairs while giving up big resources for downgrades from even an injured Cam. He preached "rebuild" but seemed content to live in purgatory his first 2 years. If he just let PJ Walker and Will Grier tank in 2020 he could've probably made things work. Or if he just kept Cam on his last year, he could've been competitive enough for people to not hate him.
I'm sure he's thrilled to get back to college after robbing Tepper of 70M for 2.5 years. I'm really interested to see how the locker room responds because allegedly they liked him.
I think Tomlin is terribly overrated by Steelers fans, but he'd be perfect for this team honestly. That said, no chance in hell am I giving up any major draft pick for him. I just can't get over the fact that everyone knew Rhule needed fired last year and we chose to sit out of a coaching pool that included Pederson, Daboll, and McDaniel.
In 2019 the Panthers defense allowed 29.4 pts per game (31st) and 374.5 yards per game (23rd).
In 2020 they improved to 25.1 pts per game (18th) and 360.1 yards per game (18th).
In 2021 they improved to 23.8 pts per game (21st) and 305.9 yards per game (2nd).
In 2022 they currently sit at 24.4 pts per game (22nd) and 356.2 yards per game (19th).
On offense, their PPG varied as follows:
2019: 21.2 (CMC games played: 16, QB Kyle Allen)
2020: 21.9 (CMC games played: 3, QB Teddy Bridgewater)
2021: 17.9 (CMC games played: 7, QB Sam Darnold)
2022: 18.6 (CMC games played 5, QB Baker Mayfield)
So we can say he improved the defense a bit, but largely was unable to implement or accomplish anything on offense due to roster and injury issues. Fans seemed to hate him, but it seems strange to blame him for the goings on of his time there.
The Panthers declined many trade offers for CMC, which will go down as utterly moronic with how few games he has played and the lack of value at the RB position. Not sure to what degree Rhule was responsible for that decision, but they could have drafted a QB by now if they traded CMC and went after a high pick.
With the Saints and Falcons rebuilding, I think Panthers ownership pushed to "win now" in a weak division... and then got screwed over by Tom Brady coming to Tampa and refusing to retire.
Alternate history for a moment... if the Panthers traded CMC before, during or after the 2019 season, they have the draft capital to move up at least 1 slot... landing Justin Herbert at QB.

Our defensive rebuild has honestly been great. We've got a very good defense that just can't get a break due to how bad the offense is. We have holes at edge and LB and we don't really have a perfect fit at 3-4 or 4-3 but we've got a pretty deep secondary and Burns/Brown/Luvu/Shaq in the front 7. The defense is maybe 1-2 players away from being special.
Fans hate him because he was brought in to rebuild "the right way" but instead did a half *** rebuild. The reason he got a 7 year contract was because we were supposed to be much worse the first two years but the roster talent exceeded expectations. Rhule specifically made the decision to extend CMC and to cut Cam while he was on a cheap deal. We could've paid Cam 35M/season in 2021/2022 and still broke even on what we've given to QBs the last 3 years.
I was actually terrified he'd fall to the Panthers and didn't want him at all lol.
DC Phil Snow is out as well, which isn't surprising.
Yeah that seems weird if they're supposed to do a good rebuild, refuse to trade assets that are about to expire, and then don't draft a QB. I'd be willing to bet there was some interference there at some point.
Maybe with the Chargers and Jets no one wanted to let Carolina trade up, or the price was too high because of the number of teams involved. Maybe a new coach can turn Baker into what he was in Cleveland.
At this point may as well throw Sam Darnold in there and let Baker Mayfield be the back up or you trade Baker again somewhere else. Trade Baker to Seattle to the Seahawks and let him compete with Geno Smith and Drew Lock for the QB1 job.
So glad he is finally gone, Then they made Wilks Interim HC and he fired DC Snow (lol) and assistant special teams coach Ed Foley.
I expect more of the Baylor/Temple Fodder to hit the road soon. We definitely wont be seeing them play anything other than ST if they are kept on.
Players like PJ Walker, Sean Chandler, and Robby Anderson are really hating this.
Geno has 9 tds to 2 int and has looked just as good as Russ ever did on that Seahawks team. There is a reaosn no one wanted Baker before the season, he sucks.
Tired of people putting down Geno but propping up Russ who has looked like complete garbage without Pete coddling him.
