    Ron DeSantis

I know he doesn't get the coverage Trump does but I think Democrats need to be far more cognizant of DeSantis than they are. Yes he polls behind Trump but that gap is getting smaller and in fact he is starting to win polls in different Republican strongholds.

To me, he could be even more problematic than Trump is when you see his history of gubernatorial decisions and his love of the culture war. He loves to use the existential cultural threat from the left as justification for aggressive uses of state power against the right’s enemies. That's basically been his whole existence since becoming Florida's governor. Can't see it being any different if he was president.

He’s engaged in human trafficking and should be charged as such.

If the Democrats had an inspiring candidate to push, I would be less worried about DeSantis. But I don't see DeSantis reaching Trump's level for the grift. He got nuts in his party like Greene being frontmen for him. Really, any republican would be dangerous considering how rabid and extremist they are becoming as a party.

Two years is a long time politically. The republicans' biggest problem is feeding their base in the primary and trying to distance themselves from them in the national elections. If I had faith in the DNC to be able to play up the republicans' dichotomy issue, I would feel better about 2024.

Do you think political parties get more or less popular as they shift further left/right?

I would say they get less popular. So if the political landscape is shifting toward conservatism, what does that say about both parties?

By what metric do you argue a shift toward conservatism?

The political landscape is not shifting conservative. It's actually the opposite. Just the Supreme Court and certain states looking for fend off liberal idealisms. What is becoming more relevant is politics in how deep partisanship runs and the culture war that exists in a growing dichotomy of thought.

That could work for or against guys like Trump or DeSantis depending on how voter turnout goes.

Assuming that the house and senate both go republican. Would that indicate that that the left is shifting left or the right is shifting right?

If the house and senate go to the republicans… would that indicate a shift?

The political landscape isn't necessarily represented by the House and Senate. Just what populations are more likely to vote in a given 2-4 year period. America as a whole is more liberal now than they've ever been and that gap is only getting wider.

So when Democrats won the House in 2018 and then the senate and presidency, did you say the country was shifting left? Do you believe that each election is an indication of the country's shift in another direction? And if the Democrats hold onto one or both chambers, does that indicate a leftward shift?

I had a chance to talk to Pete when he was here in Iowa and I found him to be an impressive young man. He seemed to genuinely want to know what we needed here. I would have no problem with him in the white house.

Absolutely correct. But if the Conservatives win the house and senate, does that indicate some pushback from the voter base to the speed at which it is going left? The reason I am asking is because it seems that people are suggesting that the right is getting further right. I disagree. I think the right is moving left to a more centrist position but the left is moving so fast to the left that the right is further away.

Yes I would say that indicated shift to the left... at least with the house and the senate. The presidency had many factors that likely played into the election of Biden.
