Tampa Bay Rays vs NY Yankees Aug. 15-17

AL East rivals will begin a big three-game series on Monday night in the Bronx with the Tampa Bay Rays taking on the New York Yankees. Tampa Bay earned a series win over the Baltimore Orioles with a 4-1 triumph in Sunday's rubber game as a -175 favorite, and owns an AL Wild Card spot at 60-53. New York is comfortably atop the division at 72-43, but has been skidding lately and dropped two of three to the Boston Red Sox with a 3-0 loss on Sunday.

The Yankees own a comfortable advantage in the season series thus far, having won seven of the 10 meetings.

Yankees have the second-highest scoring offense in baseball at 5.23 runs per game on a strong .770 team OPS, also second-best. New York pitching grades out nearly as well, ranking third in the Majors with a 3.28 collective ERA including a mark of 2.95 from one of the game's best bullpens.

Aaron Judge is having a historic campaign, posting a 1.086 OPS with an MLB-high 46 homers, 12 stolen bases and 100 driven in. Anthony Rizzo has also provided plenty of pop, posting an .841 OPS with 27 homers and 67 driven in.

Gerrit Cole will be on the mound for the 24th time, hoping to continue yet another strong season as he's 9-4 with a 3.38 ERA and 178:33 K:BB ratio across 138.1 innings. The 31-year-old tossed seven scoreless innings against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday, allowing four hits while striking out eight.

In their 9,213 innings played, the Yankees have earned a defensive efficiency of 72.0% (3rd in the majors). The New York Yankees have turned 72 double plays and own a fielding percentage of .988 (2nd in MLB). The Yankees have recorded 1,035 assists, 48 errors and have 3,071 putouts this season.

New York suffered a huge blow last week when slugger Matt Carpenter went down with a fractured foot, while outfielders Harrison Bader (plantar fasciitis) and Giancarlo Stanton (Achillies tendinitis) are also sideliend. Starting pitcher Luis Severino is recovering from a strained lat. The bullpen is starting to get beat up with Michael King (fractured elbow), Chad Green (Tommy John surgery), Miguel Castro (strained shoulder), Zack Britton (Tommy John surgery) and Stephen Ridings (shoulder impingement) are out.

    Gerrit Cole
    RHP
    9-4, 3.38 ERA, 178 SO

Gerrit Cole pitched seven innings, allowing no runs on four hits and no walks while striking out right in New York’s 13-inning loss in Seattle on Tuesday night.

Cole looked great against a Mariners team that has given him trouble in the past, including his last start, but was matched pitch for pitch by Seattle’s newly acquired starter Luis Castillo. Cole’s performance was a welcome sight for his fantasy owners who had watched him toss three clunkers in a row before Tuesday. Cole also threw his first scoreless outing since seven shutout innings against Cincinnati back on July 12 before the All-Star Break. Cole remains at 9-4 with a 3.38 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and a Major League-leading 178 strikeouts in 138 1/3 innings across 23 starts. Cole will try a fifth time for his elusive 10th victory of the year in his next start on Monday at home against the Rays.

    LHP
    4-3, 2.56 ERA, 91 SO

    Nestor Cortes
    LHP
    9-3, 2.67 ERA, 125 SO

Nestor Cortes Jr pitched six innings, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk while striking out 10 in New York’s 4-3 loss in Seattle on Wednesday.

Cortes recorded a quality start on Thursday for the fourth time in his last seven starts and struck out double-digit batters for the first time since ringing up 11 Rangers back on May 9, over three months ago. After a rough June where he logged a 4.15 ERA, Cortes is 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 39 innings since the beginning of July. Cortes is 9-3 with a 2.67 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and 125 strikeouts in 118 innings across 21 starts this season. Cortes will take a third shot at his tenth win of the season in his next start on Tuesday against the Rays.

    Wed, Aug 17 • 7:05 PM EDT

    Corey Kluber
    RHP
    7-7, 4.40 ERA, 103 SO

    Domingo German
    RHP
    1-2, 4.18 ERA, 17 SO

Domingo German pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits and two walks while striking out five in New York’s 3-2 extra-inning loss in Boston on Friday.

German left in line for the win but watched Clay Holmes blow his fifth save as he continues to struggle. German remains at 1-2 with a 4.18 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, and 17 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings across five starts this season. German registered his first quality start of the season and sports a 2.61 ERA in his last three starts. German will look to get his season record back to .500 in his next start on Wednesday against the Rays.

Our pitching should be fine. The hitting is becoming a huge concern.

I do agree the offense is inconsistent and prone to power failure, but they AIN'T blowing the saves!

quite a few blown saves the yankees could have won with a sac fly in a few games bases loaded 1 out situations..

True. Recently I believe the BP has been the culprit.

BP and hitting . I think column A and column B apply. These next 2 series are monsters. The Rays then the Jays. They have to start winning series. If they win these 2, ti think they create a safe distance. If they lose these two, the lead could be down to single digits for 2 teams. Crap, potentially 3 teams!

Dr, the last 5 games the Yankees have scored 8 runs. The 1998 Yankees used to have 8 run innings every other game, yes, innings.

True, Boston just scored three runs per game while Yanks scored just two runs per game. Very good pitching, very poor hitting.
