How to make both Julius and RJ more efficient next year ?

Julius likely will be back next season. RJ will be back as well. Both were inefficient in averaging their 20 pts per game. How do we help them perform better ? I think Julius has to be used in a pick n roll offense more often with a point guard. I think RJ will improve with just natural progress and dedication. What does the team do to make Julius be more efficient. If he can be an improved player again he will be either a player to keep or a player with much better trade value. What can be done ?

Something that has been harped on for a few years now: A pass first point guard.

Pre-seroquel 25 tab PO Ben Simmons was a good fit. On paper, Simmons was the perfect fit for this Frankenstein roster. Versatile guard who can switch off and guard a forward. Guy has no qualms being the #4 option on the team. Rebounds. Plays defense. That's a Thibs guy.

Now, I don't know. Back surgeries always make me squeamish.

Hopefully the Knicks find that point guard who can be the glue to all of these mis-shaped pieces.

At the same time, it wouldn't shock me if the Knicks sign a 40 year old Lebron James, ending his career and tour in New York. That's about the vision of a typical Knicks' Front Office.

This is the correct answer and the only one that will work but Thibs will do the opposite, double down on his starters until they finally hit some shots.
Basically do the same thing that lost the Knicks game 7 in the Finals against the Rockets in 94.

If you trade Randle, you would have no choice but to play Obi Toppin at the 4 and really can Obi be as effective?

I think the best way to accomplish this goal is to play RJ and Randle separately more. Let RJ run with the bench a lot so he can be a primary ball handler and be the point of attack. Spot up shooting is not RJ's strength although I'm not sure these days what RJ's strength is. If strength is RJs biggest asset, I'd like to see him on the box more although last night we saw smaller players guarding him. Let him handle it and make him learn to pass.

RJ is usually money on those corner 3's. I dont think we need to demote him to bench, that would be a drastic move. We were the #4 seed with him starting, and now we have a much better PG and SG.

He didn’t say bench him. I agree, staggering the substitutions is a good idea. Take the whole starting unit out first, and leave him on with the bench unit a few minutes before he comes out

Then you sit him, and let him come back in to close out the half/game

I feel like RJ and Randle play fine together, though i havent looked at any numbers. Randle gets him alot of open looks. he's just not hitting them right now. and RJ's size and defense helps on the other end.

They do. I’m not saying they can’t play together. But doing it the other way gives RJ matchups against bench players, and also gives him a chance to be the main option.

Im also not saying for a long time, talking like a few minutes a half. Something like starters come out around the 8-9 minute mark, then RJ stays on the floor the rest of the quarter. Or he comes out a bit early, then back on with the bench unit

Barrett should start but also I like the bench having 3 ball handlers. I don’t care if it’s Evan, RJ, or Grimes. I just think having an extra ball handler takes a lot of pressure off quick. I don’t think he has be a first option. Just a guy that can be trusted handling and initiating a little.

I’ve somewhat given up on Thibs really committing to any of the kids but they can’t kick the can forever and I staggering let’s us see guys like Q, Obi, Grimes get mins along side first line guys. In general I welcome a little more experimentation

Yeah, not trying to bench RJ. Just trying to play him more with the bench guys so he can handle the rock and get more involved offensively as opposed to sitting in the corner or out on the 3pt line. RJ seems like a rhythm guy and someone who needs to feel the rock. IQ can use the help and more open looks w/o putting the ball on the floor. RJ isn't gonna handle the ball much when he refuses to pass and we have Brunny and Randle handling it. Stagger these guys and I think we'll get more out of them.
