    Trevor Bauer Receives 324-Game Suspension

Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred announced Friday that Dodgers right-hander Trevor Bauer has received a 324-games suspension — two full seasons’ worth of games — effective today. That the suspension is effective today, rather than beginning retroactively last summer from the point Bauer was placed on administrative leave, indicates that Bauer will be suspended, without pay, through April 2024. Bauer, unsurprisingly, announced that he intends to appeal the commissioner’s decision. He tweeted the following statement:

“In the strongest possible terms, I deny committing any violation of the league’s domestic violence & sexual assault policy. I am appealing this action and expect to prevail. As we have throughout this process, my representatives & I respect the confidentiality of the proceedings.”

The Dodgers issued the following statement in reaction to commissioner Manfred’s decision:

“Today we were informed that MLB has concluded its investigation into allegations that have been made against Trevor Bauer, and the Commissioner has issued his decision regarding the discipline. The Dodgers organization takes all allegations of this nature very seriously and does not condone or excuse any acts of domestic violence or sexual assault. We’ve cooperated fully with MLB’s investigation since it began, and we fully support MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy, and the Commissioner’s enforcement of the Policy. We understand that Trevor has the right to appeal the Commissioner’s decision. Therefore, we will not comment further until the process is complete.”

I don't know how the appeal will go, but consider this the necessary reminder that one need not be found guilty of something in court to be suspended by your employer for it. "Innocent until proven guilty" applies to the justice system, not to your employment.

The morals clause of the standard MLB contract is purposely nebulous and covers situations like this.

feels like they made an example out of him... herrera etc got a slap on the wrist i believe. Mlb should ban all players that abuse their kids or wives forever. I love that herrera is mashing for us right now but it is sick he has a job making millions.

If it's upheld, this works out for the Dodgers about as well as it possibly could.

That's the one thing I don't like about this.

Bauer violated terms of his contract. The Dodgers don't have to pay him because of it.
To be fair, I've always thought that a player that is on the 40-man roster and gets suspended should not be replaced. The team should play with 39 players available.

You want to punish the other players for something one person did?

Now another woman has come out with sexual assault allegations against Bauer. Dude's MLB career is over.

The law finds him guilty of nothing, chick had zero proof, yet he's banned for two years. Seems a bit ridiculous imo.

That said, it's also stupid that someone of Bauer's status would even risk getting involved in something like this.

I expected a suspension (whether I agreed with it or not) but that seems a bit much given Ozuna was basically committing domestic violence in front of police and didnt even fact a full season suspension.

A third woman has come forward. I wonder if MLB knew of that when they decided on the suspension.

Edit: Per the WaPo story, they did speak with her.

The Columbus woman and her lawyer, Joe Tacopina, said she shared her allegations with MLB. She said she is willing to testify in the arbitration hearing that would result from Bauer appealing. MLB declined to comment for this story.
Explains some of the suspension length. Given that there are three now, it's not unlikely that they've spoken to more women who just haven't spoken to the media.

The teams should do a better job of managing their players. It is an individual decision to do something that causes the suspension, but the team needs to pay for it to stop this sort of behavior.

They're adults, what do you expect the team to do?

Anyway, apparently Bauer was the first player to not agree to a suspension and come to terms on the length, which probably also helps explain why it's two years.
