Thank God!! Last game in Texas, first two vs Tampa we scored 6 runs.

Seeing the Pillsbury doughboy round the bases was highlight of game. I said to wife, he can't make it around the bases. To get her to watch

    19 more games left.

It's been a very bizzare year to say the least .

If we can take 4/5 from the Rays that would be huge. Gonna be a hell of a matchup today with Gausman and McLanahan.

Well... that didn't go as planned. Ah well we had our chances early on.

3-2 still good result and passed the Rays.

Gaus with some extreme splits. 2.87 ERA 1st half and 4.21 2nd half. 4.48 at home compared to 2.45 away.

This was always the fear with gaus.

    4.21 isn't terrible.

It is a pretty simplistic breakdown that can get skewed by really small sample sizes. Today's start turns good second half numbers into slightly better than average second half numbers. I don't think it is alarming in any way.

    ERA by Month:
    April: 2.19
    May: 2.72
    June: 3.96
    July: 5.09
    August: 2.70
September - 1 very good start, 2 aren't so great

If he had bad splits first and second half throughout his career, I may be concerned, but last year's splits were an outlier to his early career. Could there be a thing where pitchers in their 30's wear down quicker? Maybe. I don't think we have enough sample to suggest that with Gausman. There aren't many pitchers in the majors better than him in August. He has had two sub-par starts in a row. Numbers skew quick.

3.45 ERA over the course of 160 innings is right on course with what we are hoping for.

Something that I think people should keep in mind in looking at splits is that pitchers usually start out faster than hitters. Whether it is the fact the show up to spring training first and hitters take time to catch up, or the weather conditions, ERA's tend to be lower in the early months. Yankees had the best OPS pre-all-star break with .776. A couple teams have post all star break OPS at .826 for example.

It's not but I'm assuming his 2nd half stats will flow into his playoff stats.

If it was the other way around then I'd be more comfortable as it would look like he's peaking at the right time.

I had brought it up before as he had a bad split past year too.

I certainly understand that view too. We haven't seen much playoff Gausman in his career either. I believe in his stuff enough to feel optimistic, but we don't exactly have much experience there.

His home/away stats have a bigger split so wonder how that factors if we have home series for the 1st round.
