    Tweet I think was deleted.

More info: MPJ got a second opinion in Florida about his back. This is a nerve issue. He has one week to get better or different treatment outside of rest is expected. If surgery happens, he is done for the year.

Explains his poor start, but this is a big hit for a team that doesnít have cap to work with. Cancar is the next man up, when he gets healthy.

Whatís the worst part is to me though is this stems from past injuries. Backs donít get better. Especially with nerve issues.

Did Denver build in any injury protections to his contract?

Pretty sure every contract has injury provisions/protections, but NBA teams are loath to use them because it makes them look bad.

Back injuries can get better, but it's kind of random. Some people get better some don't. Sometimes more surgery fixes it, sometimes it's therapy and exercise, sometimes nothing seems to help. Steve Kerr's back was so bad he couldn't coach for half a year but he hasn't missed a game in years.

That said, it's a VERY risky bet to think he'll ever be 100% and not have an ongoing risk in that area.

Feels bad for the guy. He is very talented but back injury is serious. What was the contract that he sign again?

    Max.

Michael Porter Jr. has agreed to a five-year rookie-scale max extension with the Denver Nuggets, his management announced on Monday. The deal is guaranteed for*$145.3 million*and worth up to $172 million, sources tell The Athletic.

Sounds like he will get steroid injections first. If this works he will not be out the rest of the year.

If it doesnít, he will undergo surgery.

His injury history makes this worrisome. But he excels as a catch and shoot specialist. Which for any injury as a catch and shoot guy, i am more optimistic about his future than letís say someone that relies on athleticism or finishing around the rim.

It's a tough spot when a young player has shown flashes of greatness when that 3rd year comes around.

What did they create restricted free agency for if teams will still feel pressured to max out in year 3 anyway? It's not like they got a discount signing him early.

I've always been confused by the end of 3rd year max extension.

They really need to work hard to find a solution to this. The fact that teams offer max contracts after 3 years because they are afraid a guy will leave rather than the fact they are actually good is a big problem.

I think they are doing it because they're afraid a guy will not play at full throttle because he's injury concerned.

But just for me, I think that's a character flaw if that's even a hint of a concern. I wouldn't want to max out anyone who I have to doubt their motivation.
