A U.S. appeals court on Thursday declared unconstitutional a federal law making it a crime for people under domestic violence restraining orders to own firearms.

The decision by a three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is the latest victory for gun rights advocates since a Supreme Court ruling last June granting a broad right for people to carry firearms outside the home.

That ruling, New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, announced a new test for assessing firearms laws, saying restrictions must be "consistent with this nation's historical tradition of firearm regulation," and not simply advance an important government interest.

In Thursday's decision, Circuit Judge Cory Wilson said banning people under domestic violence restraining orders from owning firearms "embodies salutary policy goals meant to protect vulnerable people in our society."

But the judge, appointed by Donald Trump, said the Bruen ruling made such a consideration irrelevant, and that from a historical perspective the ban was "an outlier that our ancestors would never have accepted."

The GQP really doesn't give a crap about people in this country, including kids.

So a 19 year old got in a car accident that was his fault and took off but got caught later? That doesn’t really scream get him off the streets and throw him in jail before he shoots a cop.

The guy should have never been allowed to be on the streets after a hit and run accident and then the very next day is involved in a armed robbery and kills a cop

But of course you would involve race

The hit and run incidents were misdemeanors and months earlier. His sentencing was Monday morning.

Linking vehicle accident to murder is some Proud Boy ******** that you only care about because “Black man killed guy whose skin color is the same as mine” and you saying otherwise is Santosian.

No one cares how many times the police are fired at, shot, or killed. No one cares if whites are fired at, shot, or killed. For the most part all folks want to talk about is cops shooting blacks. Even if it is justified of which half of America struggled with that for a cop.

so a hit and run misdemeanor should be punishable with lengthly jail time?

If you want the ultimate, you've got to be willing to pay the ultimate price. It's not tragic to die doing what you love.

Sure they do. But 2 things here:

    1. For every police officer killed by gunfire (not counting when they shoot each other), they kill 19
    2. As stated many times, the police create the violence they face with their hyper aggressive rules of engagement

We will stop talking about cops shooting blacks when they, ya know, stop shooting blacks at a rate that doesn't match up even in the slightest with their population rates.

I won't correct your error on crime. That is not for this topic.

Again people don't care about cops getting shot at (PSD). Never spoken of. All that is spoken of is that cops shootings are always bad. The left loves to idolize criminals.

Cops justified to be shot at? Near nil. Not remotely true the other way around. Convenient that info is left out on the 1/19

what error? 64 police officers killed by gunfire last year. They killed 1,176.

Between police and citizens, who has:

    1. weapons 100% of the time
    2. weapons training
    3. authority to exert violence anytime they like

Is there occasionally times when police are ambushed, or their lives taken for no reason? Of course there is. But typically, the police bring violence into the equation, are the better armed, better trained, and have authority to kill. So no, we typically don't feel bad for police officers involved in violence, they likely created...

Nobody idolizes criminals. But we do feel the police turn situations that wouldn't produce criminal charges into those situations a TON. They target people of color for all spectrums of law enforcement, push violence at every turn, have a long history of protecting their own and being protected, and frankly are a legal gang much of the time.

The police need a complete reform.

Not going to correct your error as stated before.
Almost all of police life loss is for no reason. Contrast that to the lives lost at the hands of police where nearly all are justified.

If folks committed less crime guess what, less police action. Police almost exclusively come only when there is a reason.

See the 117th Congress for one of the latest examples of idolizing a criminal the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021

That’s because one happens so much more often. More people are killed by cops than cops are killed by people, by a wide margin.

We just watched police beat a man to death for a traffic violation and people are still saying “if he hadn’t committed a crime he wouldn’t have died”
