And the “it’s not my money, so why should I care” excuse is lame. If you’re even a casual fan of sports, you are aware that what guys cost matters a lot. If you told me that the team would spend 500M, then sure, buy everyone. But that’s obviously not the case, as proven by these exact conversations we are having. So us overspending on guys now may cause us to not be players later, when the right guys come up. And did us overspending year after year in the past guarantee anything? No

Thank you for overstating the obvious. No, nothing is guaranteed. Overspending goes with the fact that half the guys in the league crumble when they play for us. There's a premium attached to coming here because of the pressure. So if we want to be players we have to dig deeper. The truth is we have more than enough resources to go get it. And right now, spending big would get us over the hump.

The only time we really dominated recently, was when George couldn’t do as he pleased, and we built from within. Then used our resources to go get what we needed when it was there. Just because guys are there, and there’s someone out there willing to back up the brinks truck for them, doesn’t mean it’s smart to do so. The early 90s were a perfect storm of us sucking for years, George being banned and Stick Michael taking over and building from scratch. I don't have a problem with doing that all over again... but how?

I could care less personally. Buying a bunch of mercenaries, and then complaining about them and how overpaid they are later, isn’t desirable to me

We need some mercenaries. I don't see a Core Four on the horizon.

BTW the Braves payroll last season was 173 and I’m pretty sure they won the World Series???

And the San Diego Padres won the off season last winter, how’d that turn out for them in 2021?

they got in the playoffs last year only because they played in the worst division in the national league and won 88 games.. but once in they had players rise to the occasion like freeman and soler..

Good idea. I think the new CBA will address the cap and luxury tax penalties. I have a feeling the MLBPA might feel the resetting of the penalty is enough of an insensitive for ownership. They would oppose anything that lowers or limits payroll. I don't blame them for the position, it's a huge pie and players want and deserve their share.

That said, where does it end? What is sustainable? Will we see $100M per season players? Will ownership interest in the teams be part of contracts moving forward? As interest in BB wanes from young fans will TV deals be as lucrative?

I will say you guys should be doing more investing in FA and adding payroll in trade. Cohen is presumably doing this at a relatively thin profit margin (if any) because he doesn't even own a % of the network in which Met games are broadcast from. I agree with you that the line has to stop somewhere but the Yankees and the YES network make a ton of money in revenue. I know that's shared with other entities besides Hal Steinbrenner but I can't believe the Yankees operate at a loss even if they were to jump payroll from this specific point. There has to still be meat on the bone. They are too profitable.

David Cone gave a great interview yesterday that says it better than i can. Your gonna hear the same thing from me that i have been saying all along. Regardless of what we think as fan the Yanks can't spend on everyone like they did 20 yrs ago. The penalties are 2 much when it starts costing picks and IFA money.

The 2 richest franchises in the Dodgers and Yankees were the primary teams for Seager and neither valued him at the money he got. Texas overpaid to get him. He's injury prone, is going to need to move off SS in the very near future.

Everything i've heard and been told is they are still in on Freeman and that they expect to get most of their upgrades on the trade market. The only spec that is untouchable is Volpe, everyone else including Peraza and Dominguez are available in the right move.

Everyone might hate this, but it's not even Dec1 and we may have to wait till the lockout is over before we see them make big moves. If anyone thinks they aren't doing anything because they haven't been active the last 2 days is a little impatient. R-E-L-A-X they are going to make moves. A mega deal with the A's remains a very realistic solution to most of what they want to get done this off season.
