2021 Chicago Cubs September IGT Thread

    [CENTER]

Seeing as the season is pretty much over, and that the IGTs haven't really been popping off, I've decided to just stick to a monthly IGT for August and September to end the season. I'll update the thread every day with the pitching matchups and where to watch, but unless you guys want me to keep doing it status quo, this seems like the way to do it for now.

Happy to see they plan to use Alzolay out of the pen. That's where he will succeed, I'd love to see him get some save opportunities

Agreed. They might need him in the rotation because they are so thin there, but I think his best chance to be a good mlb player is ok the pen.

He may indeed be better in the pen, at least at this point. I think they probably want to limit his pitch count for the year too. Also lets them see more of Mills, Steele, and Thompson in the rotation for next year.

Is that what they said theyre doing with him?
I can see it to limit his innings the rest of way, or they can go to 6 starters the rest of way.

    He looked sharp tonight

If starters these days are only pitching 4-5 innings anyways, there's no issue with having him throwing 4-5 innings every time in relief, a de facto start but teams not able to load lefty hitters against him. Being a long reliever might be a great role for him because of that. He's not going to have any success as a starter until he figures out how to get those lefties out.

They might have him on a limited pitch count for the rest of the year though, maybe around 50. He only threw 40 tonight.

Having Alzolay pitch after Steele's starts is brilliant. Steele is a lefty so the opposing lineups will usually have more righties than if he came in after ie: Thompson and Alzolay destroys righties, gets killed vs LHH.

I can't see Steele or Thompson ever consistently doing much in the rotation. Their stuff just isn't that good. Average velocity when in the rotation, average breaking balls. Just average overall. #4 or 5 guys at best, 4.50 ERA's written all over them. Better than Trevor Williams at least.

But since we need starters badly they can compete with Mills (and possibly Alzolay) for the #4 and 5 slots next year. Would prefer Alzolay in the pen as a long man to start the year at least. I think ideal is Mills and one of Steele/Keegan in the rotation and the other in the pen.

Hopefully we acquire 2 TORPS in the offseason.

LOL. Well we do have the money and the prospects and there's lots of good starters available this winter luckily. There's 6 FA guys who would be considered a #1 or #2 by my count, plus Syndergaard and Kluber as wildcards.

Just busting your balls. It's doable. The problem is there are a lot of teams with money and space now. And many of them are smack in their contention windows. We'll see.

Yeah it might be just what Stratos mentioned with them trying to limit his workload for the remainder of the season.

But im hoping Ross or someone else realized that coming out of the bullpen can play to Alzolays strengths.

I still think Adbert has a solid future in the rotation but for the reminder of the year, I am fine with him being used out of the bullpen.
    Screw sabermetics.
