not just kemba for horford... boston gave up their 16th pick in the draft and got back moses who basically became trash once he started to get acutal minutes... we signed horford to that horrid contract and the celtics are eating it? yay

Horford is making less than Kemba. The thing is, unless Boston wins it all next season he only gets paid $14,500,000 the final year of his contract.

Here's the win for the Celtics:

Both have two years left. Kemba has $36mil this upcoming year, and a player option for $37mil the following year that he's likely to pick it up as he won't make that money back. Horford is $27mil for this upcoming year (helping with the tax bill) and the following year only $14.5mil of the $26.5mil is guaranteed.

That gives Stevens and the Celtics options for 2022 offseason:
    Cut Horford and save $12million.
    OR
Trade Horford to a team that wants to get under the tax and needs that $12mil in savings, and pick up a player and/or pick for basically nothing other than helping a team get under the tax.

Actually....Kemba has a trade kicker that increases his pay by $10mil, not sure if I factored that in. Not that it effects the Celtics side, but makes it more likely he opts in to his 2022-23 contract year.

I love Kemba. Thought he was great for this team. Then he got hurt, and it appears he will never be the same. I think he can still be a solid player but he’ll never live up to that contract. This was a financial move plain and simple, and one that had to be made.

Now Horford isn’t worth his contract either but he can be a valuable veteran in a limited role. He saves us a ton of money. He’ll fit right in with the team and is familiar with the organization. There is value in that.

I hate having to dump Kemba like this but honestly there wasn’t much else we could do with him I don’t think.

Also as of this moment OKC owns:
    Pick 4 pre-lottery
    Pick 16 (Boston)
    Pick 18 (Miami)

And if Houston's pick falls to 5, they can swap Miami's pick for it. Can you imagine if they get a top 3 pick, swap 18 for 5, and have 16?

So why did OKC do this again? How does Walker fit their rebuilding plans?

Pick hoarding…. And now they’ll try to trade Walker too I guess. But if Boston had to give up a first rounder to offload Walker, I wonder what kind of deal it would take to attain him from OKC
