    Yankees spending habits.

The Yankees are really bad at spending money and this season itís crushing them
By Neil Greenberg June 14, 2021 at 2:14 p.m. EDT

    Perspective from the Washington Post:

The New York Yankees had Major League Baseballís highest payroll last season, but that didnít stop them from another offseason spending spree, committing the fourth-most money of any team in free agency. Much of that money was spent to retain the services DJ LeMahieu and Brett Gardner, plus add starting pitcher Corey Kluber. The moves pushed the Yankeesí payroll to over $202 million for 2021, the second-highest among all 30 major league teams.

Yet for all their spending, the Bronx Bombers, if you can even call them that anymore, are barely over .500 (33-32) on June 14 and drawing plenty of scrutiny over their free-spending habits. The Yankees spending big on players is nothing new. The organization has had one of the two highest payrolls in eight of the past 10 years, including this one. The outliers were 2018, when the Yankees had the sixth-highest payroll, and 2017, they were third. The problem is that for all that money, theyíre receiving relatively little production in return. In fact, this season has a lot in common with similar bloated payrolls over the years, years in which the Yankees bet on past or unsustainable production from a player rather than reasonable future expectations.

Weird because no one in the Yankee's everyday lineup has a significant salary besides Stanton and LeMahieu. Yeah Judge and Hicks make over 10 million dollars but Judge's salary is a steal right now and that's not a ton of money for Hicks if he was actually playing.

Most that payroll has gone into pitching.

I agree Mets. The author seems to be relying on history to make his point. Currently the major big dollar players aside from Stanton and DJ are pitchers.

Its an argument of annual salary, not of total contracts. Look, everyone begged the Yankees to re-sign LeMahieu in the offseason but like drt said, it seems like a sweeping generalization. LeMahieu was worth every penny of that when he was brought back but hasn't played like it this year. Hicks got hurt. Are those guys making significantly more than they would somewhere else? No.

Yes this year some of their investments haven't panned out but that wasn't the case in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, etc. That hasn't happened more recently until this season.
