Move a couple contracts around and could still land a free agent.
I would prefer the Mavs acquire Smart through trade because Id like to see their cap space go to signing both DeRozen and Richaun Holmes. Those are the 3 guys Id like to see the Mavs add this off season.

For sure, ijs Brunson only makes $1.8 and Smart $14.3 so for the trade to work, without any other contracts then you'll need about $12 million in cap to make it work.

Unless the Celtics wanna take a flyer on Maxi or Powell, in that case even better. Then can still have the space to land a Lowry/DeRozan/Conley type player.

Brunson is due for a contract extension this off season. His salary should end up being in the 3/$30M range.

Well, ya can't trade guys for 6 months after an extension, so I'm not positive waiting until the deadline to acquire Smart is wise.

exactly the issue I had with that signing to begin with. It wasn't like we were signing some all-world PG.

I was glad he wanted out of Charlotte, I would hate to be stuck paying that guy that much $ and we probably would not have gotten Ball if we kept him.

I think it will mean that teams that make better decisions will have a massive advantage just like it is now.

When smaller market teams re-up questionable "stars" for huge contracts it ruins them for years, and even when they fire their GM and coach (who they pay in full the remainder of their contracts) then they have to send out assets to get rid of their bad contracts from the past.

I don't think it's clear the issues will go one way over the other.
