Clarke Schmidt pitched 3.0 innings in the FCL (New rookie league). Great to see him back in action.
Update on the Taillon trade. Taillon has been awesome for the past month, while Yajure and Contreras are both injured (Contreras with the ever ominous forearm strain). Canaan Smith is having a decent year in Double-A though with very little power. Maikol Escotto is having a decent year in Low-A with very little power or speed.
I think so far this trade has started to work out great for the Yankees depending on how Taillon finishes the year. They could come to regret the trade in the coming years though if Contreras turns out like he could and Yajure ends up being a #3.
Pretty good week for Yankees minor league pitching:
-- Luis Gil named the Triple-A East Pitcher of the Week.
--Shawn Semple named the Double-A Northeast League Pitcher of the week.
--Jhony Brito is the High-A East Pitcher of the Week.
FCL (14-4) (Squeaked past the Tigers, 4-3)
SS Alexander Vargas: 0-for-4, 3 K
.317/.386/.444 in 70 PA.
CF Kevin Alcantara: 1-for-4, RS, 2 K
.360/.448/.520 in 29 PA.
C Antonio Gomez: 1-for-4, RS, 2 K
The three prospects I just listed are three kids teams could ask for in any potential trade with the Yankees. No, they are not at the point where they can be used as the centerpiece in big trades. They would be the lottery ticket deal sweeteners. All three play premium positions.
RF Raimfer Salinas: 2-for-3, 2B (1), RBI, 2 RS, 2 SB (2)
DH Agustin Ramirez: 0-for-2, RBI, 2 BB, CS (1)
The 19-year old catcher hit .239/.300/.374 in 180 PA for the DSL squad in 2019.
3B Marcos Cabrera: 0-for-2, 2 BB
1B Nelson Gomez: 1-for-4, K
LF Stanley Rosario: 0-for-2, BB, K
2B Jose Colmenares: 0-for-3, K
RHP Clarke Schmidt: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
He is finally back after a longer-than-expected absence.
LHP Ben Keizer: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Juan Carela: (W, 1-0) 3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
2.12 ERA (17 IP, 12 H, 8 R, 4 ER, 0 HR, 4 BB, 22 K). Nice start to the season for the 19-year old.

TJ's last 4 starts have been good. I think that's about the best you can say about him and the trade. Three of the four prospects the yankees gave up ended up on the Pirates 30 top prospects. If that's what the going rate is for a starter with two tj surgeries then the yankees absolutely need trade Montgomery and German in the offseason.
6 of his last 7 have been very good and during that time he has seen his ERA go from 5.74 to 4.36. Definitely trending in the right direction. If he finishes the season like his last 7 starts have been, the trade will be a steal. It's definitely possible the Yankees fixed him and it took until mid-season for him to take to the adjustments.
I agree, he's looked like a totally different pitcher his last handful of starts. The arm action doesn't look as forced as it used to be and he's been mixing his pitches much better. His 4 seam has become a much more effective pitch since he's back to using his sinker.
Early in the yr he was primarily throwning his 4 seam and CB, players were laying off the CB and sitting FB. Now that he is throwing his sinker, 4 seam, CB, SL and CU he has been a much better pitcher. I'm not sold that he's going to be the guy from his last 5 starts going forward but is see him being a mid 3 era guy going forward. If he can pitch to a 3.5 ERA for the rest of the yr, its hard not to get a little excited about him next yr. If he's closer to this guy than the guy we say the first part of the yr it hard not to like this trade for us.
I don't think it should be to shocking that it took the guy 15 plus starts to begin to figure it out. He hasn't pitched in 2yrs, rebuilt his motion and changed the majority of his pitches. Clown had always said we needed to give him till the trade deadline to really judge him and he was correct.
This is what the Yanks were hoping for when they traded for him. If he can stay healthy, by the end of the yr, IMO we'll be happy we made this deal.
Depending if they trade any of our top pitching specs, we could have an extremely good rotation next yr.
1 Cole
2 Sevy if he can stay healthy, i'm not concerned about his performance, he easily could be better now that he's added the sinker
3 Taillon
4 Monty
5 German
6 Schmidt
7 Gil
8 Otto
Then later in the yr we could see Waldichuk, Medina or others
He Phoba, what do you think about our about Brendan Beck, Richard Fitts and Chandler Champlain ? They all look like really promising picks. Beck, if the Yanks can add a couple of ticks to his velo like they have shown they can easily do in the past, looks like he could be a very, very good pitcher.
Fitts was a top 100 guy from a great fall but fell because of a bad spring but looks like with a little development on his command he could be a nice piece also

PR Dionys Vallejo: 0-for-0, RS, SB (1)
Vallejo is a 21-year old infielder who hasn’t hit much in his brief career. However, he has drawn 41 walks in 290 career plate appearances.
RHP Freicer Perez: (L, 0-2) 2.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
He left the game early last time out – obviously, it was nothing serious. After his big “put him on the map” season with Charleston in 2017, Perez has run into the injury bug. He pitched 25 innings in 2018 and didn’t pitch again until this season. I believe Perez is a minor league free agent this winter. The Yankees are highly unlikely to add him to the 40-man, so we’ll see where his career path goes. Given what he has gone through, one would assume he would be willing to re-sign with the organization.
RHP Alfred Vega: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
1.54 ERA (11.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 6 BB, 14 K)

RHP Jarod Lessar: 2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
Lessar is back down here after his one appearance stay up in Tampa.
LHP Brandom Sanchez: 1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
Good to see Peraza in the lineup
These kids must get rattled seeing guys fly out the door. I wonder if minor league teams, of contenders see a dip in their numbers close to the deadline, especially if their team is rumored to be making moves that will include mi or leaguers?
