I'm leaning towards Cashman needing to pivot. The arms, especially at the lower levels seem to be real. That should be our future. But the position players are not looking like true studs.

So here's my reason to pivot. Use our arms as future pitchers for this team. Trade for or sign position players. If we need to use some of our pitching depth as assets in trades, we should because we supposedly have enough to do that.

News:

In a shocking move around Yankees’ prospect circles, OF Jake Sanford was released last night. There are rumors that Sanford was involved in a baseball memorabilia scam on Facebook. I have no idea how deep that goes or how much it contributed to his release, but the Yankees were not going to release him due to performance. He has been a productive minor league player with MLB aspirations.

The 2022 season has been a mystery for Sanford. The Yankees did not assign him out of minor league camp, which was strange given that he appeared destined for Somerset at some point during the year. One assumes that was injury-related, but the latest rumors just add more intrigue to a strange story.

A third-round pick in the 2019 draft, Sanford hit .285/.356/.467 in 435 plate appearances last season for Tampa/Hudson Valley. He contributed 13 doubles, five triples, and 16 home runs. Fangraphs didn’t list him in their Top 40 prior to 2022, though they did note his power and bat speed.

Down in Tampa, C Ben Rortvedt reportedly had a setback during his minor league rehab stint. The injury appears to be to his knee. He only played in two games (one behind the plate), going 2-for-4 with a home run.

Scranton Railriders (12-22) (Earned a much-needed win over Syracuse, 4-1)

RF Estevan Florial: 2-for-4, 2B (7), RS, 2 K, SB (10)
14-game on-base streak. He is 11-for-32 in May with four doubles, four runs scored, five walks, and is a perfect 5-for-5 stealing bases. He keeps hitting, hitting for power, stealing bases at a very high rate and playing elite defense. If Hicks doesn't improve on either side of the ball soon, I'd much rather see Flo get a shot. I'm surprised Hicks hasn't hit the IL yet
SS Oswald Peraza: 2-for-3, 2B (6), 2 RBI, BB, K
.214/.289/.359 in 114 PA. It would be a tremendous boost if Peraza went on a hot streak.

The offense should receive a bit of a boost with the return of Inciarte, who was hitting .295/.380/.455 in 50 PA before heading to the injured list.

I have to give props to Alexander. This is a young kid who is being asked to do little more than pinch-run and come in for defensive purposes. It is easy for a veteran’s bat to freeze up in this type of role, never mind a youngster’s.

Somerset Patriots (20-11) (Defeated Altoona in a fun game, 8-7)

SS Anthony Volpe: 1-for-4, 2 RS, BB, 2 SB (13)
To say Volpe needed a game like this is an understatement. He is 13-for-14 stealing bases and has 16 walks (12.6%) and 20 runs scored. The strikeouts are higher than he would like (33; 26%). Overall, I still don’t find myself overly concerned though I would love to see a hot streak.
LF Brandon Lockridge: 1-for-3, RS, 2 BB
23 runs scored in 28 games. 12 walks in 121 PA (9.9%). In 2021, he walked 22 times in 327 PA (6.7%). His power is down, but I have confidence that it will pick up as we get into the warmer months.
CF Jeisson Rosario: 2-for-5, 2B (3)
Back-to-back multi-hit games.
2B Derek Dietrich: 3-for-5, 2B (5), HR (7), 3 RBI, RS
The veteran takes over the organizational home run lead.
RF Blake Perkins: 2-for-4, 2 2B (9), RS, BB
17 extra-base hits (9 doubles, 2 triples, 6 home runs) in 96 PA. He is still slugging .663. We are talking about a player who has never slugged above .378 in any prior season.
DH Michael Beltre: 0-for-4, SF, RBI, 4 K
A key sacrifice fly late in the contest offsets those four strikeouts. I love baseball.
3B Jesus Bastidas: 1-for-5, 2B (5), RBI, RS, 3 K
15 starts at 2B, three starts at SS, and two starts at 3B. For a kid like Bastidas, versatility is key.
C Rodolfo Duran: 1-for-4, HR (2), 2 RBI, RS
7-for-22 with a double and two home runs. He played 31 games in Double-A last season in the Phillies organization (and four in Triple-A). It is fine for him to be parked here, though an extended hot streak can certainly put him on the Triple-A radar.

The power has disappeared for now, but he is drawing his walks (14 BB in 123 PA; 11.4%). Entering tonight, he was averaging 4.102 pitches per plate appearance, which would be the highest of his career if he keeps it up.

Wells has been so good that this particular night, where he reached base 40% of the time, feels boring.

Ten walks in ten May games (he had 16 in 17 April games, so he is showing off the plate discipline)

Hardman hit a two-run HR with two outs in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game. On 5/11, he hit a pinch-hit HR in the bottom of the 8th to give Hudson Valley a lead. He came up with the bases loaded and two outs in the 11th, but couldn’t repeat the magic.

Last season, he struck out 121 times in 401 PA (30.2%) while walking 46 times (11.5%). So, we are seeing a little increase in the walks and a dip in the strikeouts. The stolen base efficiency is also improved. It is OK to be cautious when it comes to Florial, but the signs thus far are encouraging.

His return to the lineup improves the organization’s depth.

14.1 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 6 BB, 19 K. Heading into this season, the 27-year-old only threw one inning since 2019 (COVID canceled 2020; one GCL inning in 2021). In High-A back in 2019, he compiled a 2.93 ERA in 61.1 IP with a 50/24 K/BB ratio.

Your right about that. I thought he might have a chance to make it to us if he remained a reliever. If he puts up good numbers as a starter, i doubt he'll make it past the top 10-15

It's remarkable that he can hold that kinda velo as a starter. He'd be a fun project to let Blake tinker with. Get him a sinker/cutter and a CU wow

I'd throw in Gil or Devi to help get it done. If we could get a deal done with those players i'd be all in.

I'm just no sure why KC would trade Melendez though. He's one of the better young hitting C around and that the hardest position to fill offensively. Perez is 32-33 and having a guy to rotate C/DH duties with will probably keep him playing at a high level longer

Anyone know how Melendez is defensively? I know his arm is really good but I don't know about the rest

Waldichuk finally getting some recognition that he deserves. The only thing they got wrong is about him not having a high velo FB. He does, his 4 seam has been up to 98-99, he just doesn't use it as much as he does his sinker which is a mid 90's pitch.

IMO, he's probably our best starting pitching spec right now. Thats saying a lot in this system
