Krook had another very impressive outing 5IN, 2H 0R, 0ER, 4BB, 7Ks 1.96 ERA
So did Waldichuk 4.1 IN, 1H, 1R, 2BB, 6Ks 1.45 ERA
Pretty nice to have a couple LH starting pitching specs doing so well in the upper levels
C Josh Breaux has been placed on the injured list down in Somerset. Thus far this season, Breaux has shown off his trademark power but hasn’t been able to get on track overall.
LHP Tyler Lyons, who made the roster for the 2019 playoffs, has been assigned to Scranton. He was immediately placed on the “Restricted List.” You will sometimes see this list come up in my “Injury Tracker.” Essentially, this is where players go if they have left the organization but the team wishes to retain the rights to the player. Players who are away from the team for reasons beyond injury can also be added to this list.
Scranton Railriders (9-13) (Lost to Lehigh Valley, 2-0. Oswald Peraza and Estevan Florial received the night off, and it showed)
SS Oswaldo Cabrera: 0-for-3, BB, 2 K
.209/.274/.403 in 74 PA. Of his 14 hits, ten have gone for extra bases (8 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run). He has six walks in 74 PA (8.1%). That is a touch higher than his number in Double-A last season (7.5%). Does that matter? If a player can maintain or increase his walk rate as he moves up the ladder, yes that matters but walk rate will never be a strength. To compare it to MLB, the league average walk rate in 2021 was 8.7%. This year, it is 8.9%.
2B Jose Peraza: 0-for-3, HBP
DH Greg Bird: 1-for-4, 3B (1), 2 K
.149/.344/.340 in 61 PA.
RF Phillip Evans: 0-for-2, 2 BB
PR Evan Alexander: 0-for-0
1B Ronald Guzman: 0-for-4, 3 K
.208/.381/.354 in 63 PA. In the first month, neither Bird nor Guzman is establishing themself as a “next man up” on the first base depth chart.
C David Freitas: 1-for-4, 2 K
CF Ryan LaMarre: 0-for-4, 2 K
3B Armando Alvarez: 1-for-3, 2B (1), K
4-for-15 with a double and home run (he started the season on the IL)
LF Matt Pita: 0-for-3, K
LHP Matt Krook: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 7 K
1.96 ERA (23 IP, 16 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 0 HR, 14 BB, 33 K). He gets the strikeouts and is consistently over 60% with the ground ball rate. It’s all about keeping the walks under control. Pun may or may not be unintended.
RHP Carlos Espinal: (L, 0-1) 2.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 0 K
Triple-A debut for the 25-year old. Espinal has been around the Yankees organization since 2015.
LHP Trevor Lane: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Michael Gomez: 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Somerset Patriots (13-7) (Defeated Portland on a walk-off HBP, 3-2)
SS Anthony Volpe: 0-for-4, 2 K
Even during a hot streak, a few duds will emerge.
CF Brandon Lockridge: 0-for-4, RS, K
DH Andres Chaparro: 2-for-4, 2B (3), HR (4), 2 RBI, RS, K
Chaparro hits the only home run across the system. He hit zero HR in his first five games and four in his 11 games since. He is up to .258 with a .785 OPS.
RF Elijah Dunham: 1-for-4
His stint on the IL only lasted the required seven days.
LF Jeisson Rosario: 1-for-4, 2B (1), RS, 2 K
He started the ninth inning rally with a double.
2B Jesus Bastidas: 0-for-4, 3 K
1B Chad Bell: 1-for-2, 2 BB (one intentional), K
3B Oliver Dunn: 0-for-3, BB, K
C Saul Torres: 0-for-3, HBP, RBI, 3 K
Walk-off HBP
LHP Ken Waldichuk: 4.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
1.45 ERA (18.2 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 6 BB, 28 K). Waldichuk made 16 appearances (14 starts) at this level in 2021, so one has to assume he is getting close to a promotion.
RHP Steven Jennings: 3.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Shoddy defense in the 5th inning tonight knocked Waldichuk out of the game with the bases loaded and one out. Jennings saved the day, getting out of the jam. Season: 1.65 ERA (16.1 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 2 BB, 19 K)
LHP Matt Minnick: (W, 2-0) 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
3.27 ERA (11 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 14 K)
Hudson Valley Renegades (12-8) (Outran Wilmington, 7-6)
After tonight’s action, Hudson Valley has stolen 56 bases in 20 games this season. They are stealing at an 83.6% rate. Entering tonight, Jersey Shore (hitting .197 as a team) has a 51-for-54 success rate stealing bases. While I have no trouble encouraging stolen bases, we can’t be seeing stuff like this in MLB.
love the aggression on the bases, I'd love to have more guys capable of doing that at the MLB level
CF Everson Pereira: 1-for-4, RS, K, SB (7)
He isn’t as hot as he was earlier in the season (nobody can maintain that), but he is on a little 8-game on-base streak. The difference between this streak and his earlier streak is a lack of multi-hit games.
C Austin Wells: 1-for-4, RS, K, SB (8)
Wells is now a perfect 24-for-24 stealing bases in his professional career.
DH Cooper Bowman: 1-for-3, 2B (4), RS, BB, K, SB (12)
25-for-27 stealing bases in his professional career.
3B James Nelson: 2-for-4, 2B (1), 2 RBI, 3 RS, 3 SB (7)
Get on base, run. Get on base, run. Rinse and repeat
RF Aldenis Sanchez: 1-for-3, 2B (1), RBI, RS, 2 K, BB, 2 SB (10)
See Nelson, James.
LF Pat DeMarco: 1-for-4, 2B (2), RBI
1B Spencer Henson: 0-for-4, 3 K
2B Eduardo Torrealba: 2-for-4, 2 RBI, K, SB (5)
A two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the 8th gave Hudson Valley the lead.
SS Cristian Perez: 0-for-4, 3 K
RHP Blas Castano: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
4.50 ERA (14 IP, 17 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 5 BB, 12 K). He threw exactly three innings in each of his first three starts. I think that they are starting to stretch out pitchers now.
RHP Alex Mauricio: 1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Rodney Hutchison: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Wellington Diaz: (W, 2-0) 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K
Renegades running wild!!! I friggin love it.
Wells and Bowman are impressive on the bases. I will keep saying it. Get Wells out of the C spot and move him to first. Don't ruin that ability by keeping him behind the plate.
Ignorance is bliss
Scranton Railriders (9-14) (Lost to Lehigh Valley, 9-3. As of this writing, they have fallen 4.5 games out in the standings. Yes, it helps that the leader (Buffalo) is “only” 14-10. It is a bunched up league)
CF Estevan Florial: 2-for-5, 2B (4), RBI, 2 K
.246/.342/.391 in 79 PA (4 doubles, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 9 R, 10 BB (12.7%), 24 K (30.4%), 5-for-6 SB). This feels like a typical kind of Florial season.
SS Oswald Peraza: 1-for-4, SB (5)
.200/.288/.323 in 73 PA. He is on a mini 4-game hitting streak (6-for-16).
2B Oswaldo Cabrera: 1-for-3, BB
Since when do you only hit singles? He is at .214/.286/.400 in 78 PA (8 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 10 R, 7 BB, 23 K, 2-for-2 SB)
DH Ronald Guzman: 0-for-4, K
1B Greg Bird: 0-for-3, BB, K
Guzman and Bird continue to flounder.
RF Phillip Evans: 0-for-3, BB
3B Jose Peraza: 1-for-4, RS
C Max McDowell: 2-for-3, 2B (1), RS
LF Ryan LaMarre: 2-for-3, 2B (4), RBI, RS, CS (1)
PH Rob Brantly: 0-for-1
LHP Manny Banuelos: 4 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
Banuelos has thrown well down here. It is just hard to find your way onto the Yankees pitching staff.
RHP David McKay: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
9 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 6 BB, 10 K
RHP Ron Marinaccio: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
I liked what Marinaccio showed in the beginning of the season. Eventually, as expected, Aaron Boone didn’t need to use him much and he stopped pitching. That’s not easy for a relief pitcher to adjust to. Hopefully, he can get into a rhythm down here.
RHP Reggie McClain (L, 0-1): 0.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Shelby Miller: 0.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, HR
Miller had an opt-out today. It looks like he didn’t exercise it. He has another opt-out coming up on June 1st.
RHP Jose Mujica: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, HR
Somerset Patriots (14-7) (Shut down Portland with ease, 5-0. As of this writing, they own a 3.5-game lead in the Eastern League Northeast)
SS Anthony Volpe: 1-for-3, HR (3), RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB
.203/.345/.406 in 87 PA (3 doubles, 1 triple, 3 HR, 13 RBI, 16 R, 14 BB (16.1%), 22 K (25.3%), 7-for-8 SB). He has 12 walks in his last ten games. On 4/19, his triple slash was .139/.220/.278.
DH Brandon Lockridge: 2-for-5, 3B (1), 2 RBI, RS, K
.236/.313/.403 in 80 PA.
3B Andres Chaparro: 1-for-3, HR (5), 2 RBI, RS, BB
.261/.311/.522 in 74 PA. All five of his HR have come in his last 12 games (three in his last five games).
RF Elijah Dunham: 1-for-4, K, 2 SB (4)
.250/.351/.500 in 57 PA. He has two doubles, two triples, and two home runs. Can he pull off a triple-double?
CF Jeisson Rosario: 0-for-1, 3 BB, 2 SB (5)
This season is matching his MILB profile to date: He can take some walks but isn’t hitting for much average. The Yankees are likely working with him on the latter.
1B Derek Dietrich: 0-for-4, K
LF Blake Perkins: 0-for-1, 3 BB, SB (6)
.291/.400/.745 in 65 PA with six stolen bases in seven attempts. The stolen bases should keep coming. We’ll see if he can maintain his offense beyond that (no, he won’t maintain a .745 SLG!)
C Mickey Gasper: 2-for-4, RS
2B Max Burt: 1-for-4, K
RHP Jhony Brito: (W, 2-1): 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K
0.89 ERA (20.1 IP, 13 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 5 BB, 22 K). Is he for real? If you have a 0.89 ERA, you must be paid attention to.
RHP Emmanuel Ramirez: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Yankees’ system debut (started the season on the IL). Ramirez pitched to a 7.34 ERA over 38 IP last season in the Braves organization. Why are the Yankees intrigued? It is likely those 59 strikeouts in 38 innings. Get a good arm, and see what you can do with it. No risk.
RHP Kyle Zurak: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
8.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 12 K
Hudson Valley Renegades (12-9) (Lost to Wilmington, 8-6. As of this writing, they are 3.5 games behind the red-hot 15-5 Aberdeen squad)
SS Trey Sweeney: 0-for-4, RS, HBP, 2 K
.209/.794 OPS (9-for-42; 1 double, 1 triple, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 10 R, 4 BB, 17 K)
F ECverson Pereira: 2-for-4, RBI, K, SB (8), CS (3)
.300/.802 OPS in 80 PA (1 double, 2 triples, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 17 R, 10 BB, 23 K). He showed power last season and I expect it to start showing up at some point this season. He has reached base safely in 17 of his 18 games.
C Austin Wells: 1-for-4, HR (3), RBI, RS, 3 K
It looked like it would be a tough day for Wells until he homered in his 4th AB. He is at .311 with a .959 OPS over 77 PA (4 doubles, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 14 R, 14 BB (18.2%), 21 K (27.3%), 8-for-8 SB)
2B Cooper Bowman: 1-for-2, 2B (5), 2 RS, 2 BB
.259/.913 OPS in 79 PA (5 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 14 R, 18 BB (22.8%), 16 K (20.3%), 12-for-13 SB). His call to Somerset will come in 2022.
3B Tyler Hardman: 1-for-3, RBI, BB, K, CS (1)
DH James Nelson: 1-for-3, BB, SB (8)
1B Eric Wagaman: 1-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, RS
RF Pat DeMarco: 1-for-4, K
LF Aaron Palensky: 1-for-4, HR (1), RBI, RS, K
The Yankees had Palensky spend his entire 2021 campaign in Somerset (it was his first taste of professional ball). He hit .216/.360/.378 in 137 respectable plate appearances. He hit two home runs.
RHP Blane Abeyta: 3 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
3.21 ERA (14 IP, 13 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 18 K)
RHP Carson Coleman: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
0.00 ERA (12.2 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 7 BB, 17 K)
RHP Bryan Blanton: 1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Charlie Ruegger: (L, 0-1) 1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 0 K
RHP Jhonatan Munoz: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Tampa Tarpons (9-11) (Split a doubleheader against Lakeland. As of this writing, they are 3.5 games behind Bradenton)
Game 1 (Won, 3-2)
SS Alexander Vargas: 0-for-3
C Antonio Gomez: 0-for-2, BB, K
CF Alex Mejia: 0-for-3, 2 K
1B Anthony Garcia: 2-for-3, HR (6), RBI, 2 RS, K
Four HR in his last three games. He is up to .265/.486/.653 in 70 PA (1 double, 6 HR, 13 RBI, 12 R, 20 BB, 20 K, 2-for-2 SB). Garcia with some batting average in his profile is a dangerous prospect. He's really putting himself on the prospect map after breaking out last yr. He and Wells might be in a dog fight for our future 1st base role
RF Grant Richardson: 0-for-3
6-for-37 with a double and HR.
DH Anthony Seigler: 1-for-1, 2B (4), RS, 2 BB
LF Raimfer Salinas: 1-for-2, RBI, BB
Game-winning RBI single.
3B Roberto Chirinos: 1-for-3, RBI, K
2B Luis Santos: 1-for-3, 3B (1), K
RHP Chandler Champlain: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
2.87 ERA (15.2 IP, 15 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 2 HR, 2 BB, 17 K). First start > 4 innings.
RHP Bailey Dees (W, 1-0): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
Dees, who stands 6’8″, is a 23-year old who was drafted in the 18th round in the 2021 draft out of Penn State. He made one appearance down in the rookie leagues after being drafted last year.
RHP Jack Neely (S, 2): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
5.40 ERA (10 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 21 K). We are still at that point in the season where a rough outing or two will skew your numbers.
Game 2 (Lost, 3-0)
SS Alexander Vargas: 0-for-3, 2 K
.159/.203/.246 in 74 PA. Not the start he wanted. He was able to get on a little streak in April but couldn’t quite maintain it.
CF Jasson Dominguez: 0-for-3, K
.216/.237/.311 in 76 PA (4 doubles, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 8 R, 2 BB, 26 K (34.2%), 3-for-4, SB). I won’t sugarcoat it: These numbers are not good. He needs to adjust – the truly great prospects eventually do.
LF Alex Mejia: 0-for-3, K
DH Antonio Gomez: 1-for-3
Single in the 7th (remember that minor league doubleheaders are 7-inning games) broke up a no-hitter. He is at .179/.281/.232 in 64 PA. On the positive side, he has reached base in nine straight games, though he only reached base once in each game. The stats start to move up when you start seeing things happening in multiples.
3B Marcos Cabrera: 0-for-2, BB, K
.241/.339/.444 in 62 PA (3 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 5 R, 8 BB, 24 K). An acceptable start to his first full-season league campaign.
C Anthony Seigler: 0-for-3, K
.270/.449/.541 in 49 PA.
RF Raimfer Salinas: 0-for-2
.242/.375/.242 in 40 PA. I love stat lines like this.
2B Roberto Chirinos: 0-for-1, BB
1B Alex Guerrero: 0-for-2, K
2022 debut. Normally a catcher, Guerrero was drafted in the 18th round in the 2018 draft out of high school. He is still only 22 years old. Last season, he hit .403/.475/.701 in 29 games between the GCL and Hudson Valley.
RHP Josue Panacual: (L, 0-2) 4 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K
He was strong after a tough first inning. The offense just couldn’t get on track to support it. He owns a 3.45 ERA in 15.2 IP (11 H, 10 R, 6 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 17 K)
RHP Kevin Milam: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
9 IP, 12 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 1 BB, 12 K
RHP Zach Messinger: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
4.50 ERA (12 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 HR, 4 BB, 16 K). Most of his outings have been strong – a few bad apples mixed in.
RHP Danny Watson: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
4.61 ERA (13.2 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 0 HR, 8 BB, 14 K). He had one bad outing (5 R in 1.2 IP) to skew his results.
I watched him throw 3 innings today and i think you're right. He hit 105.5 in his 2nd inning of work, the fastest pitch ever thrown in college BB.
I think you're on to something though. He can hold 100 plus velo for 3 IN, why not see if he could do it for 5-6? The arm motion isn't pretty, but when you throw that hard, you really don't have to be pretty doing it,lol
If you can make him a starter, wow. If you can't, you put him back into the BP and let him be a MIRP/closer
Check him out whenever you guys get a chance, it's worth a look. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAOijXTgLe0
I love seeing everyone on the right side of 200. Peraza still getting on base and stealing.
Flo, just get that k rate down to 25% and you will likely be a 250 hitter and since you take your walks, you will be on base plenty enough to run wild
Ignorance is bliss

Yanks need to get that Ben Joyce kid. He throws 105 mph. Any chance he falls in our lap with draft?

Good to see Volpe finally waking up. I can't say the same for the rest of our top position prospects.
Good Pereira article https://www.nj.com/yankees/2022/05/y...s-and-has.html
How long till Pereira gets the bump to AA? I have to believe if he's sitting 300 in the end of the month, they have to move him up a level.
Where we could all be eating crow, and I've mentioned this as a shocking possibility, could Cash sit on these specs knowing that-
JD will be gone after 2023
Rizzo will be gone after 2023
Hicks will ha ve 3 years left but he will be 34 and his contract is not bad
DJ will be 2 years older
IKF?
Gallo?
Right there you have room for 2 OFs, 4 IFs.
Pereira, Wells, Peraza, Volpe, will all be ready by then (if they are ever going to be ready)
Could the FO actually be waiting on the farm and that's why they aren't selling out for huge contracts?
Ignorance is bliss
You gotta think Pereira and Wells should get the bump by the end of the month, they both played a big part of last yr in high A last yr.
I think it's entirely possibly, i'll even say probable that thats the exact reason they aren't handing out big deals. All the guys mentioned were high draft picks or big dollar IFA signing so they have the pedigree you like to see with your top specs.
I really think it's entirely possible they end up with Peraza a SS, Volpe at 2nd or 3rd, Cabrera ends up as the super utility guy and Pereira ends up as one of the OFers
The 1st base mix is going to be interesting because they have 2, possibly 3 big time specs that could end up at 1st. Obviously Wells is likely to end up there, but they have been continuing to put him behind the plate. In a shocking development, his arm and motion have improved, a lot.
If A Garcia continues like he has the last season, he might be the most likely choice to end up at 1st. He's 6'5-6 250 so he makes a huge target over there. He's a switch hitter, with huge power, especially from the LH side and he's walking as much as he's striking out. That's a hell of an interesting 1st base profile that could turn into an absolute monster over there. He legit has Judge/Stanton type power/ exit velo and anytime u can add a switch hitter to the lineup, IMO thats huge
Sweeney is also a big kid at 6'4 220 and has great hands. He won't stay at SS long term with us and if Volpe is at 3rd, 1st could be a legit option. I really love the idea of him at 1st because being a good defensive SS, u would think that would make him at least an above avg to plus defender at 1st and give you a big LHed bat also
The only reason i'm not positive that those could be likely results for those guys is we still have to see how they do at AA. Until they can pass the AA test, it's a lot of hoping. I always come back to Flo as the cautionary tale of getting to excited about kids who look great in A ball. Flo looked like a star and was a top 30 spec when he was in high A and has never fixed the approach/ pick recognition issues.
I would bet pretty much anything that Peraza and Cabrera are going to be MLB players, Volpe very likely. The rest, we'll see but its very promising.
The crazy part is we aren't mentioning Arias, Dom, Perkins, Gomez, Vargas and lots of others that have huge ceilings.
I know from people i've talked to in the Yanks management, that they are extremely high on their guys we have and they have more than a couple in their future plans
