The RailRiders fall to Syracuse 5-2 in their season opener. They are obviously 0-1 on the season, but hey: Luke Voit looked good!

Starting Pitcher: LHP Mike Montgomery: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R (2 ER), 1 BB, 4 K – 37 of his 64 pitches (57%) went for strikes…the 30-year-old lefty threw 50 innings for the Royals across 2019 and 2020…he took the loss
In Relief: RHP Nick Nelson: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K – It was more of the same for the frustrating Yankee reliever, who threw a wild pitch in a 1-2 count with the bases loaded…he also surrendered a home run...all in all, 20 of his 33 pitches (61%) went for strikes

Miggy Mantle: LF Miguel Andújar: 0-4, 4 LOB – brutal night for 2018’s breakout player, who grounded into 2 double plays…nice to see him get some work in the outfield, though
Gittens Alert: 1B Chris Gittens: 2-4 – no word on his exit velocity, though nice to see him keep up the hot spring
Leftovers: Socrates Brito, the best named player in the Yankee system, hit a 2-run homer…Robinson Chirinos played catcher, which was nice even if he went 0-3…Derek Deitrich went 1-4

High-A Hudson Valley Renegades
The Renegades had a rough night at the plate, falling to the Jersey Shaw BlueClaws 6-2. The big story, though, is that Luis Medina performed well in his 2021 debut. They’re 0-1 on the season now.

Starting Pitcher: RHP Luis Medina: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 8 K – 41 of his 67 pitches (61%) went for strikes, an important tell for the 22-year-old…he struck out 5 of the first 6 batters he faced…he’s now struck out 71 batters in his last 47 MiLB innings

Low-A Tampa Tarpons
The Tarpons beat the Dunedin Blue Jays 11-7 in their debut, but it was a weird offensive performance. Of the Tarpons 12 hits, 11 came from the top four spots in the lineup…Anthony Volpe, Austin Wells, Trevor Hauver, and Jake Sanford went 11-17 with 7 walks. The rest of the team…did not do that well. The Tarpons are 1-0 on the year.

Starting Pitcher: RHP Matt Sauer: 3.1 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 6 K – 30 of his 54 pitches (55%) went for strikes

First Rounder Watch: SS Anthony Volpe: 2-3, 3 R, 2 RBI, 3 BB – The 20-year-old infielder had a double and a triple as he reached base 5 times…nice to see, I left him off my to watch list, so hopefully he makes me, an idiot, look dumb
First Rounder Watch Times Two: C Austin Wells: 2-4, 3 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB – Wells hit a HR in his first pro game, and he reached base 4 times…pretty good debut, even if he struck out twice
Multi-HR Watch: 2B Trevor Hauver: 3-4, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB – The 22-year-old middle-infielder hit 2 HR in the first game of the season, not bad
Four-Hit Game: RF Jake Sanford: 4-6, 2 RBI – all of the hits were singles for the 23-year-old outfielder

Absolutely great to see those outing from both Gil and Medina. Gil looked very, very good in his outing, Medina shined. The best thing i saw was that he only issued 2 walks which would indicate that the control continues to improve and striking out 5 of the 1st 6 hitters is a hell of a start to the season. He’s now struck out 71 batters in his last 47 MiLB innings, that doesn't even factor in his incredible performance and being name pitcher of the yr in the Caribbean winter league or his dominant performances in the Caribbean Series against AAA/MLB competition.

If those 2 can continue like they did tonight, they'll be top 20 specs by the AS break. They could also be in position to be those electric type arms playoffs teams call up late in the yr that could be dominant

I've been expecting big things out of these guys for the last couple yrs, tonight was the first step in that direction.

Florial hit a HR in his 1st AB

C Austin Wells: 2-4, 3 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB – Wells hit a HR in his first pro game, and he reached base 4 times…pretty good debut

Overall some incredibly good opening day performances for our guys....we've been waiting for it

One bad note ,Roansy Contreras, sent to the Pirates in the Jameson Taillon trade, started tonight for them. He looked pretty good, too, striking out 11 in 5 innings of work with a 97 mph fastball. He didn’t walk any, nor give up a run.

I really didn't care about anyone else they sent to the Pirates in the deal other than Roansy... thats a solid debut at AA for him. It wouldn't surprise me to see him in their rotation this yr

I figured with the start of the MILB season today!!!!!!!!!! I would start the new Spec thread so we can put all the updates here.

Lets hope this is a great and healthy year for our specs and that we finally get to see Jasson and the rest of the quality young specs we have for the first time in a couple seasons.

We are absolutely stack with talent, throughout the entire system we our absolutely packed with power arms, some with incredible ceilings.

We also had alot of younger kids that were supposed to have taken giant steps forward.

I can't wait to see who all theses specs look and perform this yr

Awesome start to the minor league season. 8 k in 4.0 IP for Medina with 0 ER. 6 K in 3.2 IP for Gil with 0 ER. 6 K in 3.1 IP for Sauer with 0 ER. Marinaccio with 7 K in 3.2 IP and 0 ER.

On the hitting side, Florial and Wells homered. Hauver hit two Homer's! And Volpe had a great game. Can't ask for much more than we got.

Medina and Gil were dominate. In both cases the hitters were extremely over matched. Were coming up on about 20 months since Medina has shown his much improved command/control and he did it this winter against MLB level competition. If both Gil and Medina can continue anywhere close to this they'll both be top 20 by the AS break.. If they both continue to over match hitters like last night, I think we'll see them moved up quickly.

Austin Wells, wow. He really can hit. I know that they talked about him making the roster out of ST, if he keeps hitting like he has since day 1 in ST he may force his name into the MLB conversation.

Florial hit a bomb in his 1st AB, made a great catch and K'd twice.

How about Anthony Volpe? 2-3, with 3BB and a couple RBIS. I hated when the Yanks took this kid, it reminded me WY to much of the CJ Abrams, Kyle Holder picks. Avg sizes, HS SS without any plus long term tools.

From what I've seen and read Volpe took this last by adding 20+lbs of muscle and really worked hard to refine his tools. He's added arm strength, enough so that scouts feel like he could easily handle 2nd,SS and 3rd base defensively. That muscle he added also increased his bat speed and power. He's always been a really good contact hitter, if u add in above average to plus power he Rea could be a nice player
I've been told by multiple scouts that Volpe reminds them of a Bregman lite. A smaller guy that creates above avg to plus power, as he fills out, and is capable of handling both positions on the left side of the infield

We got pretty much everything we could have wanted to see from our kids last night.. I can't wait to see these guys keep performing...

I really believe we're going to see a handful of guys jump up to elite level specs almost right away. I also think we're going to see some big things from some of our kids 8n SS ball

Must be nice to have Luke Voit in the lineup, huh? He and Miguel Andújar went deep as Scranton won its first game of the year, topping Syracuse 7-5 (box score).

Starting Pitcher: RHP Brody Koerner: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K — 28 of 51 pitches were strikes (55 percent)…solid debut for 2015’s 17th-rounder…this is his third stint in Triple-A.
In relief: RHP Kyle Barraclough: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HR — brutal outing…gave up a grand slam to journeyman minor leaguer Jake Hager.
In relief: RHP Adam Warren: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K — restored order after Barraclough bombed…very nice outing, could certainly be a big league option at some point this season if needed.
In relief: LHP Trevor Lane: 2.0 IP, 3 K, zeroes — also threw three scoreless innings in spring training with the big league club. Very nice season debut.
In relief: RHP Brooks Kriske: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 WP, 3 K, — made the ninth inning interesting, but picked up the save.
Rehab Watch: 1B Luke Voit: 2-3, HR, 2 RBI — I know Aaron Boone said they’re going to be patient with Voit’s rehab, but he sure looks ready. Had two hits last night, too.
Miggy Mantle: LF Miguel Andújar: 2-4, HR, 2 RBI, sac fly, K — Much better than last night’s 0-fer. Went back-to-back with Voit.
Leftovers: RF Trey Amburgey also chipped in a homer…DH Chris Gittens and 2B Derek Dietrich went 0-for-7 combined, but drew a walk a piece. Dietrich hit into two double plays…yikes.


Double-A Somerset Patriots
Somerset moves to 2-0 with a 3-1 win over the Harrisburg Senators (box score).

Starting Pitcher: RHP Shawn Semple: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K — 40 of 61 pitches were strikes (66 percent)…good work from 2017’s 11th-rounder.
In relief: RHP Jefry Valdez: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 K — 21 of 33 pitches were strikes
In relief: RHP Michael Gomez: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K — 13 of 19 pitches were strikes
In relief: RHP Keegan Curtis: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K — 15 of 26 pitches were strikes…picked up his first save of the season.
CF Estevan Florial: 1-4, 2B, 2 K — Double just missed going over the wall for what would have been his second homer of the young season.
3B Diego Castillo: 3-4, 2B — Always has had good bat-to-ball skills, never having posted a strikeout rate north of 11.4 percent.
Leftovers: C Donny Sands went deep…2B Hoy Park and RF Michael Beltre recorded RBI singles. Beltre also stole a base. Park made a fielding error, his second already.
High-A Hudson Valley Renegades
Hudson Valley got its first win as an affiliate, 8-0 over the Jersey Shore BlueClaws (box score). Good pitching and plenty of offense, namely from Brandon Lockridge.

Starting Pitcher: LHP Ken Waldichuk: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 1 WP, 2 K. — 28 of 51 pitches were strikes (55 percent)…control came and went for 2019’s 5th rounder in this one…walked a batter in all three innings he appeared in.
In relief: RHP Barrett Loseke: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K — 29 of 46 pitches were strikes
In relief: RHP Zach Greene: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 5 K — 28 of 46 pitches were strikes…8th rounder in 2019 doesn’t throw particularly hard but has big spin rates, per FanGraphs.
CF Brandon Lockridge: 4-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 RBI — Home run short of the cycle…Lockridge has some wheels and profiles as a fourth outfielder type down the road.
Leftovers: 2B Ezequiel Duran picked up two hits and a stolen base, but also struck out twice…SS Oswald Peraza went hitless, but walked and stole a base in his six plate appearances…DH Josh Breaux picked up a hit but struck out thrice…it was C Mickey Gasper, not Breaux in the video below.

Low-A Tampa Tarpons
What a slugfest. Tampa topped the Dunedin Blue Jays, 19-9 (box score). The Tarpons were down 7-0 after two and a half innings, mind you.

Starting Pitcher: RHP Harold Cortijo: 1.2 IP, 4 H, 7 R (6 ER), 5 BB, 2 K — 20 of 55 pitches were strikes (36 percent)…all seven runs scored with two outs in the second…outing ended after three consecutive walks, two forcing in a run…what a nightmare.
In relief: RHP Kevin Milam: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K
In relief: RHP Trevor Holloway: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K — pitcher of record in this one…signed as an undrafted free agent last year.
In relief: RHP Shaine McNeely: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K
In relief: RHP Carson Coleman: 1.0 IP, zeroes, 2 K
SS Anthony Volpe: 1-5, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B, 1 BB, SB — Now has three steals in two games.
DH Austin Wells: 2-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 2B, 1 BB — strong offensive start from last year’s first rounder after homering yesterday.
2B Trevor Hauver: 2-2, 2 R, 3 RBI, 1 HR, 3 BB — three homers already…last year’s third rounder can really hit, though he was overshadowed by Spencer Torkelson in college.
CF Pat DeMarco: 2-3, 3 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K — surprising power output from a guy listed 5-foot-9, 192 pounds. Was the team’s 17th rounder in 2019.
Leftovers: Everyone except C Carlos Narvaez and LF Juan de Leon had a hit in this one, though both at least reached base via free pass…RF Jake Sanford chipped in two hits and 2 RBI…1B Andres Chaparro notched 4 hits and 2 doubles…3B Chad Bell picked up a couple of singles

Pretty great start from Wells, Hauver and Volpe. Pretty impressive for those kids 1st taste of pro ball, especially considering they are starting in long season ball. Most top picks spend atleast a season in the SS leagues, so to see them get off to this kinda start, where they are is exciting

I absolutely hated the Volpe pick, he wasn't even ranked in the top 100 draft specs. Yeah its only been 2 live games but from what i've heard and read Volpe grew a little bit and filled out alot. He really worked hard this last yr to develop and refine his tools which scouts thought all were above avg but non were plus at the time of the draft.

I was told that they feel like he may eventually need to move to 3rd base because of better long term options at SS like Peraza. ect, but they feel like he will hit enough for 3rd base to be his best long term position. They are going to keep him at SS as long as they can because SS are always more valuable specs and hope he can stick at SS for as long as possible. According to what i've been told we might have a really good one on our hands and he's off to a hell of a start

I was told Volpe "grew up alot physically" over the last yr and has improved some of his tools to being plus or better. He was 2-3, 3 R, 2 RBI, 3 BB, he had a double and a triple as he reached base 5 times last night and tonight he was 1-5, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B, 1 BB, and already has 3 steals on the season. Pretty impressive start for a 20yr old in his first taste of long season ball. I will gladly hope that i was very wrong about picking him and he turns out to be a tremendous player for us.

Wells is definitely showing why the Yanks were so high on him that they drafted him twice. It pretty easy to see why there was talk of him making the MLB roster out of ST because the bat is special from the LH side. He has excellent bat control, barrels the ball very well and has big raw power. From reports he's looked drastically improved defensively, hopefully they were right about him not having access to a good catching coach and that was why he struggled with the fundamentals behind the plate. Also its why they are so confident that they can make him atleast league average or better defensively fairly quickly

Tanner Swanson, our catching coordinator, has spoken very highly of his work ethic, his desire to improve everyday and his improvements behind the plate. It will be interesting to see if they bring him along more slowly to work on him defensively or if he forces his way up the ladder by hitting at whichever level he's at. If he was in consideration for a roster spot in ST, you gotta believe with a good season he would be in the conversation to get a look at the end of the yr. He's off to a very fast start in Aball, you gotta wonder if keeps hitting like this for the next couple weeks if they wouldn't bump him up a level. It sure would be fun to see Dominguez and Wells batting in the same lineup at some point this is yr

Trevor Hauver was 3-4, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB with 2hrs last night, tonight he was 2-2, 2 R, 3 RBI, 1 HR, 3 BB he already has three homers. Hauver was over shadowed in college and was forced to play out of position because his team had so many elite defensive INF. He has absolutely always had plus power and a plus hit tool but he's a tad undersized and the position was always the question coming out of college. He was thought to be a steal when we picked him in the 3rd round and so far he's showing what the Yanks saw in him.

You gotta wonder how long the Yanks will keep these 3kids at this level if the keep dominating. If i had to guess they'll probably be a little more aggressive with Wells and Hauver. than they will be with Volpe, because Wells and Hauver had some college ball experience, where Volpe was drafted out of HS

So far we've seen pretty much everything we could have hoped for in the 1st couple games. Our top pitching specs have dominated in their 1st outings, we've had several kids who tools have drastically changed since we saw them last, we've seen multiple of our lower ranked pitching specs show giant improvement stuff wise and our top draft picks are off to great starts.

Now we just need to see how some of our top young specs perform in the SS leagues and we could be well on our way to a drastically improved farm

Read today that Semple's velo improved to 93-95 this year with sick movement, plus he added a knockout slider. His performance in game one definitely looked like he had greatly improved.

I looked at Tampa's roster today and unfortunately I saw something I wasn't hoping to see. Montana Semmel is on the 60 day DL. So is Alfredo Garcia.

I really hope that whatever the injuries are to Semmel and Garcia don't cost them another yr of development.

Hopefully some of the IFAs break out this year because it looks like positional wise the organization is a bit thin. I'd bet on a hitter in the 1st round of the draft too.
