Round 2, pick 41: Levi Onwuzurike DT

Levi Onwuzurike aligns as an interior defensive line prospect. He has excellent overall athleticism and demonstrates good body quickness as a pass rusher. The way he plays with exceptional leverage helps him to excel as a run defender. As a result, he is extremely difficult to single block. He is disciplined with his technique to maintain gap control. He demonstrates the toughness and emotional endurance to play in the trenches every snap.

Ideal Role: This player is an eventual starting NFL defensive lineman.

Scheme Fit: He’s an ideal fit as an interior player in a 4-3, but could also gain weight and play in an odd front.

Explosive interior rusher is a player we haven't had since, what, Suh? He's not Suh but adding rush ability from the inside is going to be a god send after multiple years of slow, unathletic, one dimensional run stuffers.

Should be a very solid player for the lions if they can get him to play every play and fix his technique (both very coachable things) he will be a starter. Possibly the replacement for Trey Flowers in a couple of years.

    Strengths

Explodes into neutral zone with his first step.
    Punishing initial pop.
Rips quick hands into shoulders of opponents for early control.
Upper-body power to punch, press and extend in setting an edge.
Will use brute force to power his way into the backfield.
Very difficult to cross-face him as a blocker.
Plays much stronger than his listed weight.
Plants a post leg and squares off against double teams.
Operates with balance and controlled movement.
Impressive short-area feet to attack edges as a rusher.
Hands are heavy and violent in battering pass protection.
Workable spin move for future rush development.
Appears unusually fast in open-field pursuit.

    Weaknesses

Loses proper pad level as the rep unfolds.
Needs to stay square when sliding down the line.
Will dislodge rather than shed, allowing blocker to stay in it.
Occasionally freelances out of his run fit.
Had some up-and-down games and average production.
Better hand efficiency would improve his rush.
Lateral slides with narrow base allows for occasional wash-down blocks.

I like what I’m reading… You’re right. A lot of his problems can be fixed with coaching. Solid pick.

So here is his comments to the media.

"I like (bleeping) people up," Onwuzurike said. "I like to get off the line and just put my helmet or my hands on an offensive lineman and (expletive) up an offensive scheme pretty much. I like pushing them back 2, 3 yards and just making them feel like ****."
Washington Huskies Levi Onwuzurike (95) rushes the passer vs. California on Sept. 7, 2019.
