Great extension for simmonds.
Hopefully his wrist gets to 100% for camp. He wasn't very effective after the injury, but it's a tough one to battle through mid season. I just want the playoffs over so the offseason starts. I don't think we have a 1st or 2nd in the draft either, so that's gonna suck. But free agency will be interesting.
Without looking at the salary cap ramifications, I'd really like the Leafs to focus on leadership and players who are difficult to play against like Savard, Landeskog (I know...pipe dream), Coleman, Oleksiak, Goodrow, etc. This team has been way too soft both mentaly and physically.
I feel like the McCann trade is just insurance if Seattle takes Kerfoot.
I know it won't happen, but if the Leafs decided to entertain trade proposals for Mitch Marner then the Kings could be a good partner. I've read they will be aggressive to add a top 6 forward and could move the 8th overall pick and/or prospects.
I think they'd have to consider a package around Matt Roy, Arthur Kaliyev who is close to NHL ready and that 8th overall pick who could end up being Luke Hughes if Bob McKenzie's rankings hold true.
They have the cap space to take Marner on ++ and the $7 mil + per year (Roy makes just over $3 mil) could help the Leafs go after someone like Landeskog as a replacement.

At least we didn’t sign Suzuki to an 8 year 64mil contract lmfao. What a terrible deal for Montreal. Like they haven’t learned a damn thing from the price and Webber contracts.
With Reilly's signing (8 years $60 million) I think this is indeed the final kick at the can for this core. One of Matthews, Marner, Nylander or Tavares will have to get moved by the off season and for me....I think it's time to shake things up anyway.
Matthews 2 years remaining @ $11.64 mil/year and a NMC in his final year
Marner 4 years remaining @ $10.9 mil/year and a NMC in the final two years
Nylander 2 years remaining @ $6.96 mil/year and a modified NMC in his final year
Tavares 4 years remaining @ $11 mil/year and a NMC throughout
Which one do you move? Definitely not an easy choice when you look at those contracts and the future asset management of the team...I'm not certain Matthews or Nylander decide to stay here after those contracts...
The way Matthews, Marner and Nylander went about their extensions (well not Matthews. He got a blank cheque) I suspect they all go to the highest bidder.
If one gets traded it's Nylander or Marner. But I think Matthews is gone after his deal. If you watch what Arizona is doing, they're setting themselves up to make an overwhelming offer to him when he hits UFA. I mean Arizona relaxes their dress code and the Leafs do right after? Lol.
Hope you're right. But they have alot of picks coming up and alot of guys coming off LTIR just before Matthews hits UFA. For some reason they'll have a bank load of money right when he gets there. I don't think it's a coincidence.
Plus the media rattles these younger players up here. The younger guys are very sensitive compared to the old school. 20 years ago you wouldn't catch a guy crying in the penalty box. Jason Spezza shouldn't have to be the vocal leader for this team. But he is right now. End of rant.
