    Cardinals at Marlins April 5-7

    at

Monday, April 5, 5:40 PM CT

    Daniel Ponce de Leon
Grabbing hold of a rotation spot during the spring, Ponce de Leon will open against Miami. He'll look to right his walk numbers, after issuing 13 free passes in 17 Grapefruit League innings, and in turn, limit the high pitch counts that have plagued him throughout his career.
    vs.

    Trevor Rogers
Rogers received a seven-game callup last season and experienced mixed results, posting a high WHIP (1.61) and strikeout rate (12.5 per nine innings). He fanned the second-most batters (29) this spring and won a rotation job in the process. Manager Don Mattingly wasn't shy about saying how impressed he was with Rogers' growth over the offseason.
Tuesday, April 6, 5:40 PM CT

    John Gant
Gant was the talk of Cardinals Twitter this winter, and he'll have the chance to prove his believers right in his first start since 2018. Having been a rock-solid reliever over the past two years, he impressed during the spring, striking out 13 over 14 1/3 frames.
    vs.

    Sandy Alcantara
Alcantara struck out seven batters across six scoreless innings on Opening Day vs. the Rays. He will face his original club, the Cards, in his second outing. The righty's final two spring starts came against St. Louis, which beat him in a regular-season game in 2019, when he allowed four runs (one earned) in five-plus frames.
Wednesday, April 7, 3:10 PM CT

    Jack Flaherty
    0-0, 12.46 ERA, 4 SO
Flaherty will look to build off of a snow flurry-filled modest outing his first time out, when he conceded six runs across 4 1/3 innings to the Reds. After relatively smooth sailing early on, he was bit by long fourth and fifth innings, ending his day at 94 pitches.
    vs.

    Pablo Lopez
    0-0, 0.00 ERA, 4 SO
López pitched five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and walking two while striking out four in his 2021 debut. He faced the Cards in his first and last Grapefruit League outings. The righty permitted two runs in seven frames in his lone regular-season start vs. St. Louis in '18.

Hopefully this series is better than the last one.

3 runs on 1 hit is a pretty good way to start the first inning of the series.

Nice job by Ponce to finish 5. Yeah Hicks and Gio both looking good. Interesting way to use the bullpen but i guess everyone else must be resting from the saturday/sunday over usage. I suspect Reyes gets the 9th

They have to be letting Hicks work himself back to the closer role, right?

    He's looking sharp.

The way the Cardinals have been going they might need Hicks to save the game in the 4-6 inning. Seems around that time the opposition is poised for a big inning.

That's actually a good point. Those middle inning guys in close games are incredibly important

Gant is barely hanging on right now... only 1 run through 3 so far though

Well... it wasn't pretty, but he got through 4 with only 1 run (0 earned). Pretty lucky to say the least.

Cardinals scratch away to get 3.... 3-2 good guys in the 7th!

Gallegos is nasty tonight... 3 up 3 down... 3 k's on 15 pitches. I hope he gets another inning.

Got out of that jam... but leaving Gallegos in for another inning probably would have prevented it in the first place.

Big win yesterday. Lets get the sweep today!

Carpenter hitting 5th was not ideal. Not sure how long Goldy will be able to hit 2nd if DeJong and O'Neill slump.
