    Deep fakes

    https://thehill.com/blogs/blog-brief...s-cheerleading

What do you think the penalty for this kind of thing should be? Technology is getting really scary good and creating fake audio too. How is/should deep fakes be dealt with?

Cat's out of the bag. There's no going back outside of taking a China approach to policing the internet. And once 5G is online for everyone people will be able to augment their reality and just live in what they believe. If you thought it was bad now, give it ten years.

    Depressing.

Deep fake tech will only add to society's "fake news" mindset of choosing not to believe anything that goes against one's preconceived notions of the world around them.

Don't like the way your favorite politician was portrayed in some video clip circulating online? Must have been a deep fake. Get caught on video saying or doing something unsavory? Oh....that was a deep fake, I wouldn't ever do something like that.

It's going to get to the point where large portions of the population won't let themselves believe anything that clashes with their personal belief system unless they saw it live and in person with their very own eyes.

The tech can be quite fun and entertaining but will undoubtedly be used for very nefarious means that far outweigh the positives. It'll be interesting to see how both the tech and the regulations on using the tech evolve over our lifetimes.

Unfortunately, this seems like one of those things that is going to be super tough to keep in check (regardless of the potential consequences).

It's not just people refusing to believe any video that clashes with their beliefs, it'll be the whole govts too.

    ***Report From CGTN***
"According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying, recent video's circulating online of alleged human rights abuses against the Uhigar population are in fact "deep fake" video's created by foreign forces, and Anti Government actors attempting to harm the countries status abroad and hurt our standing in the world. The government strongly denies the claims and actions in those faked videos, they are not real and should be disregarded by the public."

Yep, and there is virtually nothing we can do about it.

Mother 'used deepfake to frame cheerleading rivals'

A mother allegedly used explicit deepfake photos and videos to try to get her teenage daughter's cheerleading rivals kicked off the team.

Raffaela Spone from Pennsylvania, US, reportedly sent the content - which showed members of the Victory Vipers team "naked, drinking and smoking" - to the coach.

Deepfakes use artificial intelligence to doctor images and videos.

She has been charged with multiple counts of harassment.

Mrs Spone is also accused of sending abusive messages to the team, their parents and owners of the cheerleading gym from fake phone numbers.

The Hilltown Township Police Department in Bucks Country said it believed her daughter was unaware of the alleged incidents.

One victim's parents contacted police in July saying their daughter had received harassing text messages from an anonymous number.

Two more families later came forward after receiving similar messages.

Mrs Spone is believed to have used the girls' social media accounts to generate the deepfake images.

Authorities traced the phone number that had sent the harassing text messages, which led them to a website that sells numbers to telemarketers.

Police then followed the data to an IP address that was tracked to Mrs Spone's home.

"Victory Vipers has always promoted a family environment and we are sorry for all individuals involved. We have very well-established policies, and a very strict anti-bullying policy in our programme," said coach Mark McTague.

"When this incident came to our attention last year, we immediately initiated our own internal investigation and took the appropriate action at the time. This incident happened outside of our gym."
