BTW what the **** was Cruz doing there?
Yeah, I'm for a strong social support system to the point I support UBI as well. Unfortunately as long as we let industries write the laws that regulate them we are just in a slow spiral into worse and worse situations for the public.
I think the household income is a result of history and culture as well as governance that is a little protectionist of their industry. It is certainly a model I'd like to see used here as well as the parliamentary elections.
I think a major factor in the unhappiness of people in the US is the regressive fee/fine/tax system we use that makes paying for day to day life a struggle for people who are not wealthy. For instance, the company you work for is wealthy and has a big office tower in downtown of a city, the wealthy people live near the office and can walk to work in 10 minutes. The poorer people have to live an hour long drive away where the rent is lower and have to drive over 2 bridges and on a toll road as well as paying for parking ... just to get to work they are paying 30% of the price of a gallon of gas to the government, car registration fees, tolls, and city parking and it's costing maybe $20 a day for someone earning $12 an hour (before taxes) that person is looking at being away from their home and family for 12 hours a day, and spending the first 25% of their day just paying for the cost of going to work. The $12 an hour is part of the issue, but to think that if we had a less regressive system and didn't charge those taxes/fees for people on minimum wage it would be like paying them $15 an hour.
Another factor in maybe making people happier would be in reducing the number of jobs that require being in the city, and also making city rent cheaper so the people that work there can live there but that would require MASSIVE increases in available housing in cities and that's not very likely any time soon. Public transportation should also be plentiful efficient and cheap if not free.
