Oladipo doesn't want to play in Houston. Didn't see that coming.
Agree to disagree on that. Assuming that trio doesn't stick around for seven years or aren't playing at prime level (both are likelly), we're talking about at least 2-3 likely high lottery picks on top of years of late first rounders. Is it likely that Houston will draft at least one player of Simmons' caliber with those picks? I'm going to say yes, and certainly the cumulative effect of having that many firsts and the assets they'll accumulate from those picks is worth more than Simmons alone.
The Rockets haven't "had much success" because they don't typically draft guys in the first round. They haven't had a first round pick in over five years, and they haven't had a top 10 pick since 2006. Despite that, they've still managed to draft multiple starter quality guys like Capela, Montrezl Harrell and Marcus Morris on top of a few solid rotational guys. The rockets havent really had much success in the draft from what ive seen. I think theyre banking on a BK blowup and the potential to get a top end pick which i guess is prob worth the risk
The issue isn't their ability to recognize talent, it's that Morey just never valued draft picks on a veteran team that was always contending for a title. Based on how Houston has recognized young talent this offseason sans Morey with guys like Wood and Jae'Sean Tate, I feel fairly confident they can use those picks to develop a legit playoff squad in the next 5-10 years.
