Grade the Offseason (Everything from Obi to Austin freaking Rivers)

Nothing is more enjoyable than making a thread that will you know will be hilarious to look back on 2-3 years from now. As someone who has drifted away and back again to this forum frequently over the last 15 years I am happy to be back on a daily basis and enjoy hearing from fellow die-hard fans. I can't still believe that even with how bad we are it's still one of the most active forums. From reading your posts I can tell that a lot of people have strong feelings about this offseason and I thought it would be fun to get some quick feedback on the moves individually and your overall takeaway. I'll wait for a few replies before I throw mine out there.

To keep it simple let's use the typical A-F classroom grades with optional comments.

Drafting Obi Toppin (#8 pick) -

Drafting Immanuel Quickley (late 1st round pick) -

    Signing Alec Burks (1yr/$6M) -

    Signing Nerlens Noel (1yr/$5M) -

    Signing Elfrid Payton (1yr/$5M)-

Signing Austin Rivers (3yr/$10M, only 1 guaranteed) -

Acquiring 2nd round picks in future drafts -

Not going ALL IN for Hayward -

Not going ALL IN for FVV -

    Favorite Move -
    Least Favorite Move -

    Overall Offseason Grade -

Toppin B- can be really good on offense
Quickley B+ I love him. Think he’s gonna be really good
    Austin rivers B quality guard
Burks C+ 1 year deal fine I guess. Don’t mind him don’t really love him as a player. He should be able to score
Noel B+ quality backup. Hopefully we keep him keep more than 1 year
Payton F why. Don’t get it.
Getting second rounders for nothing A+
Not giving Hayward 4 years A+
Not going for fvv (basically had to max him to have any shot ) C he wasn’t gonna come anyway

Favorite move was not trading up for toppin. Stood here.

Drafting Obi Toppin (#8 pick): B-

Newest draft pick is also the oldest player on the Knicks. Suspect jump shot. Win now player but no point guard to get him the ball his effectiveness will be moderate.

Drafting Immanuel Quickley (late 1st round pick): C+

A point guard who can't handle the ball or pass. 1.9 apg. 1.6 turnovers per game. Shoots well.

    Signing Alec Burks (1yr/$6M): C

This year's Trey Burke, Langston Galloway, Alonzo Trier. He'll be gone next season.

    Signing Nerlens Noel (1yr/$5M): A-

Much cheaper and younger solution to replacing Taj Gibson. Brings athleticism and size.

    Signing Elfrid Payton (1yr/$5M): C

Basically Leon Rose thought he could swing a deal to bring either Chris Paul or Russell Westbrook to New York. Much like Donnie Walsh, Phil Jackson, Steve Mills...he struck out. Thibs refusing to let Dennis Smith Jr, Frank Ntilikina run the point demanded a veteran.

Signing Austin Rivers (3yr/$10M, only 1 guaranteed): C+

A damage control move. Payton and Rivers will be the starting back court. Sad part, Rivers is the best shooter on the team.

Acquiring 2nd round picks in future drafts: Inc.

Draft picks are only as valuable as the player who is drafted.

Not going ALL IN for Hayward: A+

His perimeter shooting would have helped with the spacing but his injuries. Plus would have damaged the development of younger players.

Not going ALL IN for FVV: A+

Fred VanVleet is a system point guard. Would have been a horrible signing.

Favorite Move: Not signing any big names.
Least Favorite Move Not addressing the back court by failing to draft/acquire a top notch point guard.

    Overall Offseason Grade C

Knicks set themselves up as a 10 win team in order to tank this upcoming season for Cade Cunningham. Let's hope it works.

Couple things. Rivers and Payton won’t both start and LOL 10 wins? 10 and 62. 0% chance they only win 10. Well win like 20+

Drafting Obi Toppin (#8 pick) - F right now unless they trade Randle

Drafting Immanuel Quickley (late 1st round pick) - F, could have had him at in the 2nd rounder and he is not a PG

Signing Alec Burks (1yr/$6M) - F, career journeyman scorer will take shots and minutes away from Barrett and will be flipped for another 2nd rounder at best

Signing Nerlens Noel (1yr/$5M) - B, solid backup big

Signing Elfrid Payton (1yr/$5M)- F, been there done that with him. Doesn't fit with Barrett.

Signing Austin Rivers (3yr/$10M, only 1 guaranteed) - F, not a PG and will also take shots away from Barrett and the kids and will only field a 2nd rounder at the deadline at best. Hurting the development of the kids is not worth a 2nd rounder!

Acquiring 2nd round picks in future drafts - TBD

Not going ALL IN for Hayward - A, he is not worth the contract Charlotte gave him

Not going ALL IN for FVV - No grade since he would have NEVER EVER signed here anyway

Favorite Move - Noel I guess
    Least Favorite Move - Payton

Overall Offseason Grade - To not be able to improve the roster with $40M in cap and future picks is unaccetable. F minus times a billion!

Obi being an F is hilarious. Even last years offseason wasn’t an F we got Morris and flipped him for a first. This offseason was fine.

You're gullible and haven't learned a thing if you think we're ending up with Cade. And who exactly are the free agents we are going to sign next offseason after another 20 win season?
