Perfect example of a win win trade. Portland has their stars and needs to make win now moves and the Rockets got GREAT value for a role player.

I like it for both teams. At least RoCo doesn't have to play center anymore lol

Ariza getting a 3rd stint in Houston.

Blazers desperately needed a 3&D wing. Great fit for their team.

I'm pretty sure Ariza isn't gonna stick around in Houston, Houston is right there at the LT line. Arizas contract is only guaranteed for $1.8 million, they'll lower there their payroll $10 million by cutting him. Or they can trade him to a team like Atlanta who is said to be looking for a veteran (or 2) to help with the kids. A $12 million trade exception.

I really like this deal for both teams.

Ariza’s contract had to be guaranteed for salary matching purposes.

Which is why the Rockets are still looking to move Tucker for nothing.

Good pick up for Portland. Houston officially on fire sale.

On the other, this feels like the end of an era. And it especially hurts because I genuinely really liked RoCo. He was a bright spot in an uneven season, and I was hoping he would be a key piece for them moving forward.

I feel like I'm going to be doing a lot of drinking and watching old Rockets highlights this week...
You sure are! But like you said, the two picks are a nice return. Although I can't help but think that Houston would have been in a better negotiating position on a Harden trade had they kept Covington and traded Westbrook. Then start trading all the ancillary guys.

He would be a good fit on the Warriors imo.

After thinking about it overnight, I think there's actually a slight possibility this trade could go either way—that it might not just be the start of a fire sale in Houston.

    1. Harden and Ariza are tight. The dropoff in play from RoCo to Ariza is significant, but I could see this as a way to keep Harden happy for at least another season. And if that's not a factor at all, Ariza's expiring $12M would be an easy piece to throw into a deal to get better.
    2. The two first rounders give the Rockets some legit assets they didn't have 24 hours ago. They can package those assets to move Gordon, House, Westrbrook, Tucker, etc. and bring back quality players in the process to improve the roster. Likely a big man or two.
    3. One underreported fact of note: The Rockets acquired defensive specialist David Nwaba last season. He's coming off a major injury, but I could see him as the long-term replacement for RoCo, and he's younger and cheaper. Maybe the front office is factoring that into it as well?

I still think, gun to my head, that the deal is the first of many that signals the end of the Harden era. But I'm not just being optimistic here when you consider all the factors. The fact that this deal was made first is interesting, too. Normally, in a fire sale, you'd expect the star to go first and then the secondary pieces, not the other way around. So I'm still holding out hope.

Would take some pressure off of Green & Klay on the defensive end as Tucker can guard the perimeter and in the paint. Hes on a cheap contract too.
