I know players hate it, but he could be constrained by the Jets for 3 years totaling $57M (2023 through 2025 seasons)

We could look at the DeForest Buckner and Chris Jones deals as a recent comps from 2020 for interior defensive lineman. I agree Donald is on another planet and is not a reasonable comp
Buckner: Similar draft status, sack totals similar too, he sighed a 4/$84M ($44M guaranteed) contract extension for his age 26 season (2020)
Jones: Similar sack totals, he signed a 4 year $80M contract ($60M guaranteed) contract for his age 26 season (2020)

Looking at the above deals, I believe Jones took less AAV in order to get a higher guaranteed contract vs Buckner who can be released today with no dead money despite the higher AAV

For QW, following similar players from just 2.5 years ago, a comparable deal would be 4 years $90M. Add in Bidenflation, 4 years $900000M…just kidding, or not

However, I think we’re looking at a 6 year deal (5 year extension). An additional 2 years to soften the blow on the cap. Would 6 year $126M ($65M guaranteed) get it done? I think that might make everyone happy, it’s a headline grabbing deal that “resets” the interior defensive lineman market, QW has bragging rights, and the team has the flexibility to get out of or restructure the deal down the line
I would love the long term deal. He's friggin only 25!! A 5 year with an option for 6 would actually be amazing. You get his prime years locked up and that's that.
My cost estimate is about the same. I was thinking 20-25 per. 25 being for a shorter deal.

Looking at Buckner and Chris Jones, I don’t see $25M being a consideration, but that would likely be QW’s opening request, same as the Jets opening likely being closer to Jones ($20M) and Buckner ($21M) being unrealistic. We could also look at Leonard Williams contract, 3/$63M $45M guaranteed even though he categorizes as a DE, he spends a decent amount of time inside

So I go back to 6/$126 which is really his 5th year option + 5/$116 extension sounds really fair…but yeah, we agree, we’re pretty much in the same ballpark

One thing I’ll comment on, QW needs his guys like Huff and Lawson to put up the sack #s. I’m not sure if either are back next year

Its one of the reasons I'm not 1000% gung ho on Rodgers. Don't get me wrong. I still think he is a great QB but this constant drama of "Will he or won't he?" affects other team's pursuits of him. It seems like him and the Packers are playing a game of who blinks first and want the perception of who was the good guy in all of this. If the Packers want to move him, move him. Jordan Love's rookie deal expires soon and you would think you want to know what he is before picking up that 5th year option.

I could definitely see a scenario where he goes back to the Packers and all the guys the Jets would have targeted otherwise are already gone.

I believe he’s done with the Packers, I don’t feel he believes in the team competing. I also don’t believe the Packers want him back

I think going for Rodgers is a huge mistake and you'd also need him to commit for more than 1 season and even 2 yrs isn't worth it. He always seems to be playing games about retirement. Kind of tired of his whole schtick in general. I don't normally agree with Stephen A but he makes a lot of great points here about him...

I don't know that he goes back but who knows with him. I also don't think he's worth the investment and cost. Would I be angry if they got him for a 3rd and at 25 per for 3 years? No.
But Rodgers won't be a FQB. He's not playing another 5+ years.
So if you go with him, you need to have a legit young QB to step in for him. If they legit think ZW can be that guy? Ok. Maybe take the shot.
If not, you have to get someone who can play for, at least, a few years
It's also fit. I don't know that I see him as a good fit. He's too out there. He would draw so much fire from the NY media.
Jimmy G? Carr? Yes. They are boring.

Completely agree on Rogers. He’s not the solution. Jimmy G isn’t either. Michael Nania just wrote a great article about him. He’s an average QB that has benefitted from playing in SF AND is injury prone. Carr is my top choice out of those 3 by far

This team is built to win now. They have a young core many of which are still on their rookie deals and Rodgers is the only needle mover imo. Jimmy G and Carr are guys who might get you to the playoffs but they're not getting you past guys like Mahomes, Allen, Burrow, Herbert, etc. I'm okay with giving up a 1st round pick for Rodgers if that's the cost. I am fine with giving the Packers additional draft capital as well under the condition that he plays after next season.

I just hope a decision is made somewhat quickly because Carr is going to be dealt or released soon and a guy like Jimmy G probably signs not long after.

Agreed. My feeling on Jimmy G is you need a really good back up for him. So if the Jets kept Mike White, signed Jimmy G and ZW became your scout team and 3rd string QB? That could work.
They could likely do the same with Carr or any of the second/third tier names.

LVC mentioned Tanehil and Minshew. Those are two interesting options. I am guessing the Titans may try to keep Tannehill rather than trying to deal with the QB competition from other teams but if the let him walk?

    Minshew had success with Hackett.

Then there are guys like Bridgewater (Injury prone). Brissett, Henne, Mayfield...
(It would be quite funny if they brought back Darnold)

I still have the same philosophy. Build the OL to be really, really good. If you do that, any mid level QB can succeed, especially with the skill position talent the Jets have and will likely improve.

That GB offense looked great without him didn't it. I would have preferred a different choice but to say he's going to be an abject failure already is just being a Debbie downer.

Yeah, considering all their wrs were gone and the ones they had were rookies. Also, Hackett wasn't even calling the plays so not even sure what the arguement is here.

In the video I posted with Stephen A, GB and Rodgers haven't been to the SB in 12 years. Are you telling me that the jets have a better team now than any of the GB teams in the past 12 seasons (not counting this past season for them because they literally had no one)? I don't think so. And now he would have to battle in the AFC at 39 years old. I think it would be a huge mistake but I don't see him coming here anyway.

Probably not but more so because the AFC is far more competitive than the NFC. The NFC blows so yes Rodgers would have a harder road to win a SB. That said, the Jets defense is excellent and if they can improve the O-line (while adding Rodgers) i like their chances a lot better with him than I do Carr or Jimmy G. Guys like that are not going to take you deep into the AFC playoffs.

I do think the Jets should take advantage of the window they have here before a lot of these younger guys get far more expensive.

    Simple question:
LVC who is it you want to start at QB for the Jets next year?

I said way before I wanted Carr but after that recent article I posted I think he may be too soft for NY. And I don't think he wants to play here but stats wise and age, I think he's the best available option.
