20% less than the tag? So 8 mil? Yeah. That is a low ball for sure. It's a very Patriot's style of move.

I have to believe they will tag and trade him next year or even this one.

Here's a question for you guys.

You have a homegrown safety, who's going to be 28 next year. He's a good player but there is a new coach and a new system.

He asks for a 4 year deal at 15 per. That would put him in the top 5 of safeties. He is ranked a top 10 safety and as high as 6 but has never been to the pro-bowl

Do you give him the deal?
Do you negotiate? and try to get him to 12, knowing that he likely won't budge?
Do you use the tag, knowing you would have 2 years of control and that would keep him on the team till he was 29?

    Personally, I wouldn't give Maye a deal for 14-15.
I certainly wouldn't offer 8 either and if that's true? That is some stone cold dealing.
My feeling is that both sides knew the other wouldn't budge. Maye's camp knew Joe wouldn't go to their ask and Joe knew that even an offer of 12 wouldn't get it done.
The question will be, who is correct? Maye for thinking he deserves a 14 mil or so, deal? Or Joe, who isn't valuing him as high as that?

Joe will be ****ed if Saleh turns Maye into a beast and then he leaves.
"if Saleh turns Maye into a beast and then he leaves," probably won't happen, because we have another year with a franchise tag and he will get traded for a first round pick +. I also wouldn't give him $15 million. I'd probably give him $11 million to $12 million for two years, so that he makes more than the franchise tag. Maybe $8 million vs $15 million will eventually get them to $12 million.

I kind of feel like Joe will pay him if he plays like a 14 mil player and this is his year to prove that.
This is all in Maye's hands. 10 mil is not chump change. Prove you are 40% better than 10 mil

Fair point, however Maye would see $11-12m on the open market right now.

Approaching players with that "prove it" mentality could easily backfire if the player decides that he doesn't want the team anymore.

100%. It is a game of chicken.

From what I have been reading, this is Joe's, MO. He's very shrewd regarding contract. That can be a fantastic thing or it can blow up in his face.

I really like what he's done. I also really want to see how this plays out.

I'm in the PROVE IT camp for Mayes..new system..getting paid as a top safety under franchise..give us one more year to see how it works..but NEXT year..gotta get done..communicate that to the player effectively (not ghosting) ..mutual respect..if he balks..after next season because of it...trade..happens all the time..business...but i personally haven't seen enough GREAT things from him to warrant paying him the $$ he seems to feel he is worth..so I say prove it.

If I'm Quinnen, I'm keeping a close eye on this too.
You might think he's safe, but didn't everyone think Maye was safe after Adams' trade and a career year.

    No kidding. That is brutal.

And not to be a dick but I hope as much for the Jets he recovers because he's a great coach for a rookie QB.

I know analytics are big in baseball, not sure how important in football but nice to see we took someone from the Steelers

    Jets reach deal with Moore.

Now they just need to reach one with Wilson

Expect that any day, now that training camp is around the corner.
I believe Lawrence signed, so the basic framework should already be set.

Still a bit concerned about not having a vet backup, but let's see how Morgan has grown since his 1st year.

That's gut hitting. Especially for anyone who rides a great deal.

That is brutal for his family and a huge loss for the Jets on many levels
