Reparations For Slavery: For or Against?

My argument against reparations is that slavery wasn't invented just for black people -- contrary to what many Americans think (ever see "Sparticus"?) You could carry the reparations concept pretty far. Native North Americans (formally called "Indians") were enslaved by Spaniards. Natives are not asking Spain for money. The Jews (including Moses) were enslaved by Egyptians. Jews are not asking Egypt for money (not that the Jews need money anyway). Whites used to enslave whites in Europe. Does that mean I should ask for reparations from myself?

I'm for reparations for anyone who can make the family connection to slaves or being screwed out of their land. Same as jews and germany, and the german people and VW. Companies or governments screw people out of property they should make reparations.

Also, reparations is the end of it, can't come back for anything more.

Of course none of it works without total equality already being in place in all policy and law too.

And in 10 - 20 years down the road…very little will have changed. Reparations will not get minorities educated, will not get fathers to stay in the home and will not change a culture that doesn't work.It will help a few people, sure. But fot the vast majority……no change.

I see the value in giving targeted grants and funding to small businesses to minorities to a point. The atrocities in our country's past to Natives Americans, black Americans, and Asian Americans (people forget that the railroads to the west were built on the backs of these immigrants, they blew themselves up with dynamite to pave the way west) are undeniable.
I understand the duality of the subject. People want to argue that no slave owners and slaves are living today, but it's very glib to act as if the founding of our country didn't impact the social structure of today's culture. I don't believe in a system that gives checks to people for their race, but giving a leg up to those we have stepped on for a long time may be something that can push us into a better future. People have been given and not given loans in the past solely due to the color of their skin, it is a fact. Sometimes small business is about the chance you are given.
