Devin Williams named NL ROY, Kyle Lewis named AL ROY

Mariners center fielder Kyle Lewis and Brewers reliever Devin Williams were top picks by their teams in Drafts past. But neither took the easy route to the Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year honors that were presented on Monday night by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

Lewis, the unanimous American League honoree, suffered a devastating right knee injury just 30 games into his professional career. Williams, the NL winner, had his path sidetracked by a major elbow injury and a switch from starting to relieving.

Wow Bohm came on strong. He made his debut on 8/13.

Williams had a truly unrepeatable season. Just completely ludicrous what he did to hitters. In cases like his, we should be grateful for the advance in pitching tech. The scouting grade on his change is a freaking 40. The pitch achieves 300 more RPM than any other change in the game and scouts thought it was an entirely average pitch.

You can bet teams will be studying his grip and his change will be highly mimicked until the next subject comes along.

You can get down a crazy rabbit hole of wild stats if you just Twitter search Devin Williams changeup because the stats were nuts. Batters were 2/62 with 41ks against it and both hits were basically seeing eye singles.

Someone also did the velocity, rpm, and vert/horizontal break analysis and Devin Williams changeup (as a right hander) is virtually identical to Adam Ottavino's slider as a lefty. The only major difference is DW's change actually has a bit more velocity. But movement and rpms are almost identical.

He did end up injured at the end of the year. The brewers didn't seem overly concerned about it, but hopefully it's not a recurring thing due to how he throws that pitch. He's had some injury troubles in the last. But if that pitch stays even close to what it was this year and he stays healthy, he'll be an absolute stud.
