Well if you get a non-playoff team you get a free amnesty so you can drop a player/salary to help with cap totals. Playoff teams you get to protect 3 and the league takes a non-protected player.

This helps keeps balance for people getting better teams while also making draft picks more valuable for teams in the lottery.
