Honestly I can see a scenario where he sticks around even if we miss the playoffs next year too, but I will start getting really frustrated at that point wasting the rookie deals or our core.
He just signed a 5 year extension. Hard to see the team firing him in the first year of that extension.

This will certainly be a very important off-season though.

Ray and Semien have been 2 of our best 3 players this year and both are FA.

The righty/lefty balance needs to be a bit better. Do we still ride with Biggio as a potential aid to that? There aren't a ton of positions on the field that aren't occupied by everyday players already. Do we need to trade a position player from this core to address other needs?

The bullpen badly needs to be fixed.

Lots of these guys start hitting arbitration now. Do we make long-term choices to lock any of them in early?

You usually get to fire the manager and that buys you another year or so.

I think with Biggio, they will wait and see if he can bounce back after all of the injuries this year. His one hand apparently has been in pretty bad shape all year.

Means he gets paid regardless, but doesn’t mean he runs the team regardless. Babcock got fired with like 25+mil left on his contract. They’re still going to be paying him for like 3 more seasons.

I hope we lock some of these dudes in long term.

Good point. He will fire the manager this offseason which COULD give him 2 more years (1 more after next to try and make the playoffs). But then shapiro will also be looking to buy some more years and could cut Atkins.

I think he'll be on the hot seat but he'll still be given a leash and keep it. I know he sogned a 5 year deal so they'll probably give him at least 2 years of that deal.

Usually nowadays whenever expectations are high and teams fail they start to feel some sort of pressure.

I realize this, but things would have to go extremely poorly if the owners are confident enough to sign a 5 year extension this year, only to fire him after the first year of the extension. He'll definitely feel heat if we don't make the playoffs next year, but I expect he'll still have another chance to keep his job.

    That could play out.

I think they're going to let him start next season though. They will give him a much better equipped pen, and if they don't come out of the gates strong, he'll be gone by Victoria Day.

Definitely possible. I think shapiro will also be feeling the heat if we miss the playoffs next season though, which could domino into Atkins getting fired earlier than expected.

Highly doubt Shapiro goes anywhere. He has final say on baseball operations but he does so much other stuff that Shapiro going nowhere. Shapiro would fire Atkins before he goes anywhere.

They are not closers. Someone will have to come in and finish the job just like it happened in Cleveland.

I’m not saying I want him back. But I’m just thinking they’re not going to fire him for their failings. At least not until they fill that hole and see how he handles it.

Charlie will most definitely be back. I don't want him back but he will be. Ross, on the other hand probably has a few years left.

Who finished the job in Cleveland?

He says that as if Atkins was a GM somewhere else. It’s really blind hatred. Nobody (and The Rock means nobody) knows if Atkins can close. This is a first for him.

And what is the expectation anyways? If you have a team like the Dodgers who can get there every year, but rarely win the WS, would you fire a GM then? Many people think that just being in the final 4 is the goal because the rest relies on luck (injuries, hot streaks, etc). Or would Toronto call for his head if we made it to the ALCS perennially but can’t get over the hump?
