Jays acquire Matt Chapman from Athletics

The Oakland Athletics have traded away another former All-Star, sending third baseman Matt Chapman to the Toronto Blue Jays for minor league prospects, according to multiple reports.

Chapman, 28, is a three-time Gold Glove winner (2018, 2019 and 2021) and was an All-Star in 2019. He has spent all of his five seasons with Oakland, with a .243 career batting average.

Chapman's average has dropped every season since a career-high .278 in 2018. Last season he batted just.210, with 27 home runs and 72 RBIs, while striking out more than 200 times.

Chapman is the latest All-Star to be traded by the A's. Oakland sent right-hander Chris Bassitt to the New York Mets last week for a pair of minor league pitchers, and on Monday the A's traded first baseman Matt Olson to the Atlanta Braves.

The addition of Chapman is the latest move in a busy offseason for the Blue Jays, who lost reigning Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray and star infielder Marcus Semien as free agents but also signed free-agent pitchers Jose Berrios, Kevin Gausman and Yusei Kikuchi to fortify their starting rotation.

Hoglund, Smith, Snead, Logue is what went out.

Fangraphs had Hoglund as our #3, Logue #10, Smith #16, and Snead #26

This is an excellent deal. Basically gave up nothing besides Hoglund. All the other prospects are 25+

Not a huge believer in Chapmanís offence, but he will be great for defence.

Our infield defense has improved greatly with this hopefully his bat settles down hitting lower in the order here. If he can even provide a .250 average with power and all star defense were laughing.

Could be a wash with the loss of defence between semien and Biggio.

Honestly Iím not sold on the offence being better than it was last season, but the pitching staff is solid.

Based on the rule of the blue Jays: Iím expecting the pitching to bomb and the bats to be insane because we only ever get 1 in a season, and itís usually the opposite of what we expect.

Well we have to reppace Semien's bat last year which was a historic performance so it would be hard to do better than last year.

Yeah basically the only way is adding an all star level bat somewhere in the infield - which they did not do imo.

Tgere wasnt a single FA who could have replicated Semien's offensive/defensive contributions.

Maybe Correa but thats $300 mil.

    Hence the trade market.
