Well....He had the surgery mid Feb. an accelerated generous recovery of 12 months finds him ahead of schedule with ample time for ST prep. An 18 month recovery, likelihood of a return to rotation at all next season diminishes considerably.
Has Monty, following his own year off due to Tommy John surgery, shown enough to be considered for 4-5 spot?
King, Garcia, Schmidt, Loaisiga, Cessa, five guys all capable of meaningful innings, whether as starters or "openers".
Last I read severino won’t be back until June earliest.
Monty wasn’t back full strength until this year and he had the surgery in 2018.
“I’ve been down in Tampa since the day after I had my surgery,” Severino said. “I do arm bike, dumbbell exercises, and I just follow the routine that [trainers] Timmy [Lentych] and Alfonso [Malaguti] plan out for me. I spend an hour and half with them in the trainer’s room before I move into the gym, every day, five days a week.
“Things have been progressing well. I’ve been making steady progress -- lifting, doing exercises. Since three months ago -- I think when I first had my surgery -- I feel way better. I’m doing everything I need to do right now so that I can start throwing this summer.’’
That was in May 2020. He has since started his throwing program. Optimistically he could be ready in time for ST 2021, all depends on his progress in the rehab.

He still shouldn’t be counted on to really help the rotation next season. And no one knows if we will get the 2017 sevy or the second half of 2018 sevy . Plus he hasn’t done very well in the playoffs either . But I think that is what cashman will do . He will say sevy will be back by the start of next season . And do nothing about the rotation this off season . And by the way the third paragraph says he could miss part of the 2021 season as well . So again Noone knows when he will be back for sure .

You can live with 2 years of a bad contract. Having to live with 8 years of Stanton (some are already desperate to move him at 31! Imagine 7 years from now!) is way worst. Just imagine how bad Pujols looked the last 4 seasons that's what Stanton will probably be in 4 years.
It is an idea, the other way you do it is by contemplating signing Judge to a more friendly contract or having to move him down the line (once his stock is higher).
Well 12 months for general recovery but 18 till a pitcher is back to 100%. He may be no better than a number 4/5 pitcher for the yankees. Unless, German returns to form and Deivi pitches lights out, we're looking at a very long year, without at least one strong number 2. i actually wonder if either Minor or Ray might be willing to take one year deals to raise their value to become free agents again after 2021.

No guarantees on anything in BB. If the glass is half full, a 12 month recovery estimate of Feb 2021 and 18 month process closer to July. I am not suggesting he should be counted on to be a major contributor from day 1. He is working hard and the rehab thus far is going well and he feels good. I prefer a wait and see, rather than write him off for 2021. But I am also a realist. A minor set back and the time table is worthless.
You on the other hand tend to have a perpetual half empty perspective. Always expecting, predicting a worse case scenario. An old saying suggests a persons reach should exceed their grasp. But I do believe there are limitations to exceedingly high and unrealistic expectation. When the goals are set too high failure is unavoidable and your self fulfilling prophecy is preordained. In research work we refer to confirmatory bias similar to self-fulfilling prophecy. We all seek to find evidence that validates our a priori beliefs or values, and may underestimate or ignore evidence that contradicts our expectations.
Whatever man you stick to your opinion I will stick to mine . I mean you yourself said there are no guarantees in baseball , that is EXACTLY why I am skeptical of people saying the Yankees current farm system is gonna lead the yanks to a bright future . There is nothing further from a guarantee than unproven prospects . As for sevy , it takes pitchers about 18 months to get back to where they before the surgery . I said he wouldn’t be ready until June . That’s 16 months . I would think that’s a more realistic time table imo

The bolded made as a definitive time frame is false
Phase Four
Phase four is weeks 14 to 26.
This phase focuses specifically on throwing again.
Start throwing just 45 feet, but make your way up to long toss throws.
The last step is to throw from the mound and simulate actual gameplay before competing.
It will likely take 10 to 18 months before you can throw in a game again.

If Sevy does well with his rehab, he could absolutely be pitching in ST. It is not a guarantee but it is absolutely possible.
Ignorance is bliss
No I admit you didn’t say it was a great idea but to even suggest it, means you atleast are ok with the Yankees using an opener . And using Schmidt or Garcia as an opener makes no sense when just last off season , cashman said they were gonna be ready this year to make an Impact on the Yankees STARTING rotation .
