    Lakers Best All-Time Starting 5

The talent pool of players that have played for them is the greatest of all-time. LeBron, Kareem, Kobe, Magic, Shaq, Wilt, West, Baylor.

    The question is:

If you were a building a team to play tomorrow in today's modern game what would be the best fit of players in the starting 5? Who do you bench?

The Lakers best players suck at spacing with the exception of West. He's a must starter. This is not the most popular starting 5, but it would be the most effective in modern ball. All 5 starters are elite athletes that were extremely agile for their size. I would turn every game into a track meet.

Fat Shaq could work too, but he wasn't as agile as Wilt. That's why I have him on the bench. Kareem should start, but I'd rather have LeBron or Magic at PF than play 2 Centers together.

In a modern game, it probably looks something like:

    PG Magic
    SG Kobe
    SF Lebron
    PF Davis
    C Shaq

I just don't think you can afford to have two traditional centers in a starting five in 2020 who can't consistently hit a jumper outside of 18 feet or switch on guards and wings. And if I have to pick a center for a modern team, I'd trust the most dominant center of the last 20 years over guys who haven't played in three-plus decades. If it's not Shaq, I'd take Kareem over Wilt.

Of the rest of the lineup, Magic, Kobe and Lebron are locks. The question is just where to play those guys. You could feasibly play Magic and Lebron at the forward spots and swap out Davis for an elite two-way guard like West. But having an unstoppable nearly 7-foot stretch big with elite defense at the 4 is hard to pass up in Davis. If you're a believer that West would have been an excellent 3-point shooter if he had played with a 3-point line, maybe you take him there instead, but I trust what I can see more than a hypothetical that I can't.

It should be based on their production as Lakers, not on their careers.

LeBron hasn't earned his spot yet.

Read KOB's original post: "If you were a building a team to play tomorrow in today's modern game what would be the best fit of players in the starting 5? Who do you bench?"

This isn't about who the greatest all-time Lakers are. It's about building the best starting five to compete in the modern NBA that you possibly can. If I was making an all-time greatest Lakers starting five, obviously Lebron and Davis wouldn't be on it yet.

This is why everyone hates the Lakers. They get to choose from the likes of Magic, Kobe, Shaq, Kareem, Wilt, and LeBron. That's 6 of the Top 10 or so players ever.

For the modern game I'd go:

    Magic
    West
    Kobe
    Bron
    Shaq

Love that you squeezed Caruso in there.

    PG: West
    SG: Kobe, Jordan
    SF: Magic, Baylor
    PF: LeBron, Gasol
    C: Shaq, Davis, Wilt, Kareem

Edit: Didn't read the original post at first and made an all-time starting five based on who's most accomplished. Unsurprisingly, the Lakers are as front-loaded all-time as they are now, so there are some really good centers who won't be getting off the bench anytime soon. I'm not benching West, who would easily be the best shooter on that team and invaluable to space the floor.

Anthony Davis making the Lakers all-time starting 5 over Kareem just feels so wrong.

It does, but consider Davis' range as a big versus Kareem. Kareem could hit a mid-range jumper out to maybe 15 feet, but Davis' spacing and versatility on both ends is so tempting. That's why I had him on mine. I think he would compliment Shaq way better than Kareem would on both ends as well.

That's why I think I'd rather have West and slide LeBron to PF.

    I actually forgot about Nash...

    PG: Steve Nash
    SG: Jerry West
    SF: Kobe Bryant
    PF: LeBron James
    C: Wilt Chamberlain

The spacing is actually quite good. The White boys would be able to play on or off ball too. I know yall would rather have more athletic and higher ranked players, but I'd go with this starting 5. It would be quite good in today's game.

Magic, Shaq, and Kareem all on the bench.
